Welsh actor Matthew Rhys has several well-acclaimed projects to his name. But out of the lot, his performance in the American spy dramaThe Americansdefinitely stands the tallest. The actor plays the role of Philip Jennings, who’s married to Elizabeth Jennings, played by Keri Russell.

The duo are Soviet KGB officers posing as an American married couple. While the actor cherishes his time on the Joe Weisberg-created show, there was one major element of it which he regrets to this day.

Matthew Rhys Detailed His Biggest Regret inThe Americans

The Americansfocused heavily on Keri Russell andMatthew Rhys, given they were the lead characters of the show. However, another character that requires equal acknowledgment would be Stanley Beeman, played by Noah Emmerich. The character is a next-door neighbor of Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, andinitiallyhas no clue about their Soviet origins.

But given he was an FBI counterintelligence agent, whose main job is to track down Soviet spies, he gets a bit suspicious of the couple. However, in the midst of these lies and truths, Stan develops a genuine friendship with Philip. Talking about the same in aRolling Stoneinterview, the host asked Rhys how his character greeted Stan with an overly cheerful greeting, despite having a strained friendship.

The actor responded by adding that initially, he struggled a lot with how to portray their interactions authentically on screen. He added:

One weird thing I struggled with on The Americans is that sometimes we never quite had the real estate – the time or space in the story – to do what would feel most real. If Stan and Philip were great mates in the real world, there’d be more nonchalance. If this series were only about a KGB spy living next door to an FBI agent, you’d probably have more time to see Philip being a lot more normal.

Rhys’s main regret was that he was not able to showcase how his character Philip really felt. He noted that if there was true friendship between Philip and Stan, their interactions would be morerelaxed, rather than Philip hiding his true emotions and guilt, which made their exchanges more tense.

In the finale ofThe Americans, Stan knows for sure that the Jennings are Soviet spies. This leads to a dramatic confrontation in the parking garage. While he is genuinely upset and sad, his love for them, especially their son Henry, leads him to let them go.
