The engaging narrative and stunning visuals were more than enough to warrant a great time, but we had Maomao at the center of it all with her interesting personality. Maomao is easily one of the best characters who stands out from the stereotypical representation of female characters in anime.

What makes Maomao more interesting is her insatiable desire for knowledge. She goes as far as trying lethal poisons on herself as she’s downright obsessed with them. This obsession is something she shares with Frieren as well.
Maomao’s obsession is concerning but admirable
Throughout the first season ofThe Apothecary Diaries, we see Maomao expressing a wide range of emotions. However, she primarily comes off as a cold-hearted and emotionless character. She is usually devoid of any kind of affection for those around her. Contrary to her lack of interest in human emotions, she is fond of medicine and all things related to it.
Her passion for gaining more knowledge as an apothecary has made her find a weird obsession with poisons. She often tests poisons on herself and tries to gauge their effects and impact by experiencing them herself. With her skills, she’s usually able to find antidotes and ways around the poisons, but even if she can’t think of one, it wouldn’t stop her from trying them out.

After Himmel’s death and loosening up through the interactions with the party, her love for magic was reignited. And thus began her endless pursuit for unusual spells.

The best part about both Frieren and Maomao is that they are more than capable of fending for themselves in difficult situations. At the root of their dangerous pursuits lies their love and passion for knowledge. They are interested in their respective fields, almost to a fault.
