The horrors of the manga industry are widely known and have become public knowledge at this point. Many mangaka have succumbed to the debilitating working hours and deadlines. Finally, Shueisha has taken a step toward a better future for its mangaka by raising the payment standards.

Even though it’s a small change in the grand scheme of things, for the largest publishing company to take notice of the challenges faced by the creators and work to improve it, is sure to cause a ripple in the industry. This announcement brought forth many interesting observations by fans as well.
Shueisha Takes A Step In The Right Direction
For any aspiring manga artist, working for Shueisha is no less than a dream. The renowned publishing company is taking steps to improve the working conditions of those affiliated with it. Recently, a change in the minimum payment policy of Shueisha was announced through X. Starting November 2024, the artists will be paid a minimum of 20,900 yen ($135) for every page (black and white) drawn per chapter. As for each colored page, the minimum pay will be 31,350 yen ($203).

These are the revised payment standards for the Weekly Shonen Jump. For other magazines, there are different payment standards. For those publishing in Jump Giga, the minimum sum paid for a colored page will be 19,800 yen ($128) and 13,200 yen ($85) for every black and white page. In addition to that, every new artist starting their contract with the company will get paid around 500,000 yen ($324).
Moreover, depending on a series’ popularity, the creators can negotiate for better pay. While this policy is undoubtedly a great change, fans have raised some concerns about the hidden costs that are part of the process. Some were also concerned about creators likeEiichiro Oda, who has been serializing for decades. As they didn’t feel that the creators were still getting their due and deserved share.

The Underlying Factors that Concerns Fans
At first glance, the policy seems like a great step in the right direction. However, there are many underlying factors that could dampen the impact of this change. Fans speculated that the creators will have to accommodate the assistants as well from their total earnings. Moreover, when the working hours are considered, the minimum payment doesn’t seem enough.

Many creators suffer from severe health conditions trying to keep up with the deadlines. Althoughcreators like Odaget to have more flexibility and say when it comes to taking breaks, all because of their sheer influence, these concerns are extremely valid, and the new payment policy is a small change but an influential one nonetheless.
In the last few years, Shueisha has taken many steps to make the manga industry more accessible to fans. For instance, making theMangaPlus appavailable for free in many countries. Recently, they also introduced a month-long program where viewers could support their favorite creators by watching ads. This decision is another addition to a list of favorable initiatives, and hopefully, there will be many more to come in the near future!
