The American filmmaker’s Philip Anderson Lord and Christopher Robert Miller gained fame for their work on theSpider-Versefranchise, earning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature forSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse(2018).

Later, they went to make the sequel of their firstSpider: Mananimated film—Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse(2023).Following the success ofSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, their focus is now on the franchise’s next installment—Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.It will follow Miles Morales as he tries to prevent Spot from destroying the multiverse.
With Lord and Miller’s proven track record of success in the animated superhero genre, James Gunn now wants them to helm a DCU project. What’s more interesting is that fans have come up with some interesting ideas, too.

In October 2022,James GunnandPeter Safranwere appointed co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios. They started working on the new DC Universe alongside a team of writers.
Since they oversee film, gaming, and animation, they could see the success of theSpider-Verseseries as a chance to replicate it at their studio. Even Gunn listedSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verseas his favorite comic book movie ever, so he’s definitely aware of its success. The 57-year-old toldGQ:

“This movie works from start to finish. It does not have a bad beat in it. I just don’t think that there’s been a better superhero movie thanInto the Spider-Verse.”
When a fan asked him on threads,“Since you love into the spiderverse would you love to have lord and miller work for any day project?”To this, theGuardians of the Galaxydirector (@jamesgunn) replied,“Yes, I saw them yesterday I should have asked.”

Gunn said he saw thePhil LordandChris Miller, but regrets not asking them about working together. Looks like the St. Louis native is eager to work with the filmmakers. And more interestingly, fans have some wild ideas for the next DC project that Lord and Miller can think of next.

The DCU’s co-CEOcould be interested in having Lord and Miller join a DCU project because they’re good at telling fresh stories and being creative. Their work with multiverse ideas inSpider-Versecould complement Gunn’s own work on similar themes.

James Gunn Shares Promising Update on DCU’s First Project
James Gunn gave an update onCreature Commandos, an adult animated series in the new DC Universe. The show is about a lesser-known DC team, similar to how he approached theGuardians of the Galaxyat Marvel Studios.OnThreads, theSuperfilmmaker talked about whetherCreature Commandosis still being made.
Gunn said the initial animatics forCreature Commandosare finished. Now, the crew is focusing on creating the final animated versions. Based on his explanation, it seems like the DCU’s first project won’t be out for a few months.
