Game of Thronesthe epic fantasy series which broke all stereotypes of what could be possible on TV, was adapted from the book series,A Song of Ice and Fire.George R.R. Martin was the one who penned this tale full of politics, dragons, and witty characters.

But who could’ve guessed that even a writer of his caliber has doubted his work? That’s right, even Martin is not immune to writer’s block and feelings of inadequacy. So, let’s understand the author’s perspective on writing and creativity.
George R.R. Martin’s struggle with writer’s block
In a candid interview at the Comic-Con,George R.R. Martinopened up about his unpredictable writing process (viaGizmodo). He was fluctuating between days of creativity when the words flowed without much thought and other days when it seemed like a challenge.
Yeah. Which is not original again with me either. A lot of writers have said that. But writing is hard. I mean I sit there and work at it. Boy, there are days where I get up and say “Where the hell did my talent go? Look at this crap that I’m producing here. This is terrible. Look, I wrote this yesterday. I hate this, I hate this.”

And I can see a scene in my head, and when I try to get it down in words on paper, the words are clunky, the scene is not coming across right. So frustrating. And there are days where it keeps flowing. Open the floodgates, and there it is. Pages and pages coming. Where the hell does this all come from? I don’t know.
His admission made people more considerate of the struggles that a celebrated author like him faces. What Martin explains, sounds a lot like writer’s block which is common in the literary world and it often delays projects. Perhaps it could be the reason behind the prolonged development ofThe Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the franchise that we’ve all been patiently waiting for.

Delays, distractions, and doubts: Will George R.R. Martin ever finishThe Winds of Winter
Over the years, George R.R. Martin has given us several updates about the book’s progress (viaEsquire). In 2015, he claimed that the book would be complete by 2016, and he wanted to align it with thesixth season ofGame of Thrones. But the novel still remains unfinished, and it’s 2025 already.
His side projects are also causing delays, as he has given his time to other ventures such as the prequel, i.e.,House of the Dragon.Fans have also voiced concerns about the author’s age, as they fear that the series might remain incomplete because he’s already in his 70s.
