A Necessary Evil is the eighth main quest inKingdom Come: Deliverance 2, taking place in the earlygame Trosky region.
This quest forces players into the first major moral decision in the game: namely whether to side with Hashek, a loyalist seeking justice for fallen comrades, or Lord Semine, a nobleman whose family is entangled with local bandits.

Your decision carries consequences that shape the fate of their entire family estate—and possibly Henry’s conscience.

The Setup: Hashek Confronts the Semine Family
The quest begins after Henryuncovers evidencelinking theSemine familyto the bandit attacks that have plagued the region—including ambushes on LordOtto von Bergow, andyou and Hans at the beginning of the game.
If you previously informed Otto that the Semines were involved, you’ll be sent with Hashek to confront the noble family at their estate during this main quest

No matter how persuasive or diplomatic Henry tries to be, the following conversation between Hashek and Lord Semine is guaranteed to end in violence.
Hashek is furious, driven by the loss of his comrades. He quickly escalates things, threatening to burn the estate to the ground unless Semine hands over his son, Olda, who is accused of aiding local bandits.

At this point you must make a pivotal choice. Selecting “You’re going too far” meanssiding with Lord Semine, while choosing “You’re right”puts you in Hashek’s camp.
What Information Do You Have To Make A Decision?
Siding With Hashek
Choosing to support Hashek results in a violent confrontation at the Semine estate. Since Lord Semine refuses to give up his son, you’re forced to kill Lord Semine, Captain Gnarly, and their guards.
After the fight,Hashek orders a brutal massacre of the estate’s civilians, including innocent staff and family members, despite any of your objections.

Following this path leads to a scorched estate and the death of nearly everyone, regardless of guilt.
You’ll then be tasked with finding Olda Semine, who is hiding in the estate’s tower. During the confrontation,Olda claims that his actions were part of an honorable rebellion—not banditry.
If you try to arrest him, Hashek will intervene, revealing thathe plans to kill everyone and burn the estate downwith the Semines still inside. When Henry returns with Hashek to report to Otto von Bergow, you can choose to condemn or defend Hashek, athough this hasno long-term mechanical impacton the rest of the game.
Siding With Hashek, But Letting Olda Go
There’s a hidden third option:you may side with Hashek initially, but change your mind and let Olda escape. Hashek will interrupt you (as he does should you side with him) but here it leads to a forced duel between the two of you.
Olda then sets fire to the estate as a diversion as he makes good his escape. This chaotic resolution is arguablythe worst possible outcome, resulting in almost every character’s death and no rewards to show for it.
Siding With Lord Semine
Choosing to back Lord Semine sees Hashek accuse Henry of treason and turn hostile. This leads to a major fight, thoughit’s a little easier due to your extra allies— Semine’s house-guards outperform Hashek’s crew.
This path preserves the lives of all non-combatants, including servants, stewards, and stablehands (although you won’t see any of them in-game again).
After the battle, Lord Semine agrees to go into hiding, and the estate’s residents flee before the buildings are set ablaze to hide the evidence. Henry and Hans then return to Otto von Bergow with a fabricated cover story. You don’t need to be proficient with speech skills forOttoto accept your explanation, and he’ll start you on the main questFor Victory.
If you take this route, Olda Seminecan later appear in the Kuttenberg regionasa random encounter, offering you his sword as a token of gratitude. While not game-breaking, it is a tangible reward you won’t find in the Hashek route — theonlymechanical award to any of the three outcomes.
So, What Should You Choose?
From a narrative and moral standpoint, siding with Hashek is generally considered the “evil” route in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The massacre of innocent people, torching of an estate, and Hashek’s unwavering bloodlust paint a grim picture. Furthermore, Hashek offers no mechanical advantages or additional content to justify supporting him.
By contrast, siding with the Semines spares lives, preserves your moral standing, and opens the door to that future encounter with Olda. This route is often seen as the “good” or optimal path in terms of narrative payoff and character development.
However, in terms of the broader story, both paths lead to similar endpoints: the destruction of the Semine estate and the beginning ofFor Victory, the next quest in the main storyline.
