If there’s one thing you could label all the folks living in 15th-century Bohemia, it’s that they were a god-fearing people. Which means that they also have a pretty unhealthy fear of demons.

A birdseye view of the brutality really pulls a new spin on things.

It means that a lot of quests in the game have a satanic theme to them, but none are quite as on the nose as The Mouth of Hell. A quest where you’ll need to head down into a collapsed mine shaft and see just what’s lurking down below.

It could be demons, could be wolves, or it could be something else entirely. Either way, we have a guide that will help you make it through this side quest relatively unscathed.

How To Start The Mouth of Hell

To begin this quest, you will want to head out toward Old Kutna, which is a small settlement just northwest of Kuttenburg.

Once you get here, you’ll likely encounter a squabble between a villager and the local priest. If you interject, they’ll inform you as to why all the cattle lie dead in the field.

Reportedly, it seems that a ‘demon’ has been in the village and has slaughtered all the animals, and it seems the locals believe that it’s down to the fact that the priest forbade the village residents from leaving offerings to the collapsed mine.

The former priest in the village had told them that these offerings would stop the ‘demons’ from rising from the pit below and prevent further disasters. But now, it seems they aren’t too happy with the lack of offerings lately.

Coincidence or demonic presence in the vicinity? Either way, Henry will have to go and check it out.

Heading Into The Mine

After this discussion, you’ll want to head to the entrance to the mine entrance, which is some ways west of the village. You can go around and chat with the locals for more info, but there really is no need.

Along the way, you’ll be able to stop off at the location marked by a checkpoint on the map above if you want to find a handy skill book to improve Thievery. Plus, you’ll want to be mindful of the bandit camp in the area as well.

However, once you reach the entrance to the mine, simply walk up to the ladder down, and a cutscene will play.

You’ll lower your offering down, and much to Henry’s surprise, a man will come to collect it. However, after he catches sight of you, Henry falls down through the weak floor to the mine below, and the guys hauls you away deeper into the cave.

Getting Your Stuff Back

You’ll eventually wake up sometime later deep in the mine, and the strange guy in the mine will have confiscated all your possessions. So, it’s time to go get them back.

Head onward, and you’ll see them skulking about ahead of you, but don’t worry about them and press on. After you exit the waterlogged area of the mine, you’ll come to an area where there is a spare torch lying around.

It’s essential that you pick that up and equip it; otherwise, this entire quest will be a huge pain for you as you feel like you are around in the dark.

After you’ve done that, proceed to a room where you’ll find a lockbox and a chest. Make a note of that for now, but press onward to the left, where you’ll find a ladder up to the next level.

You’ll see him staring at you from above, but he’s still no threat at this moment, so climb up and head along the path. Eventually, you’ll come to a fork where you’ll see them and an alternative path. Be sure to take the path leading away from them.

This will eventually take you to a room where you’ll find a chest with your items, as well as a sheet explaining the knight’s orders to protect this mine from demons. Equip your gear, and then you have a choice to make.

Confronting The Knight

No matter what you do during this quest, the knight in the mine is going to die, but if you play it smart, you’ll make the eventual fight a lot easier.

You can stay in the mine and confront the Knight, but this leads to a somewhat tricky 1v1 fight that can easily be avoided.

Instead, you’ll want to head to the surface as soon as you can, and when you get out of the mine, the Father Marion, as well as some guards will be standing waiting for you.

You’ll explain the situation, but it’s not long before the Knight follows you out. This leads to a brawl, and you’re able to effectively sit back and let the others deal with him instead of getting your hands dirty.

The Mouth of Hell Rewards

Unlike some side quests in KCD2, this one is actually rather lucrative.

When you complete the quest, no matter how you choose to do it, you’ll gain 225x Gloschen for your efforts. But, that’s only part of your potential spoils.

If you take theKnight’s Keyfrom the corpse of the fallen madman and head back to the Lockbox from before, you’ll find his contract as well as 276x Gloschen.

Plus, if you have the skill to pick hard locks, you can also check out what he has in his chest while you’re at it.

And, to cap it all off, the Knight also has some fantastic armor that, admittedly, does need some repairs, but when fixed, is some fine armor for this stage in the game.
