Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Complete Guide and Walkthrough

Let’s get you up to speed so you can become a master criminal ASAP.

Lockpicking Basics

The premise of lockpicking is straightforward enough. As long as Henry has at least one lockpick in his possession, he may attempt to open any lock in the world.

Move the cursor around the lock. The cursor represents the lockpick. As you get closer to the sweet spot, the cursor will grow in size, finally turning gold when it’s exactly in position.

You must now spin the lock counter-clockwise while keeping the gold cursorexactlyin the same location as the lock spins around.

The cursor will turn gray again if the lockpick is out of position, and you’ll break and lose your lockpick permanently if you rotate the lock too far with the cursor out of position.

Easier locks have more teeth for reference points to keep the cursor in the correct position and a shorter distance needed for the lock to rotate before it’s opened.

The opening in the lock (red arrow) must always be rotated counter-clockwise all the way to the top of the lock (green arrow) without breaking the lockpick in the process.

If you’re really struggling with a specific lock due to the starting point of the gold cursor being in an awkward spot, there’s a remedy for this. Simply leave the lockpicking mini-game and come back immediately, and the gold cursor location will be changed. Experiment until you figure out what cursor position is easiest for you.

Until Henry has leveled up his Thievery skill a significant amount, Hard and Very Hard locks will be nearly impossible to crack. In the above picture, you’ll notice that the lock needs to be rotated a full 360 degrees, and there are no teeth in the lock to use as reference and hold your lockpick in place.

Attempting to open these difficult locks in the early game is nearly impossible until more skills are learned and acquired.

Prevent Getting Caught

Since theft is illegal, picking locks is frowned upon by on-lookers in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. As such, you need to be extra cautious when choosing to put your thievery skills into action.

If your lockpick breaks, it will make a sound that alerts nearby NPCs.

Picking locks at night, wearing inconspicuous clothing, and making sure no one is close by are ways to ensure you don’t get caught.

If you are apprehended during your attempt, prepare to be fined or incarcerated for your actions.

Consider drinking a Savior Schnapps before lockpicking as you’re still learning the ropes. If you break all your lockpicks or get arrested, you may just reload and try again for unlimited practice.

Useful Perks To Unlock

As you open more locks and commit other sneaky crimes like pickpocketing, Henry will begin to earn experience points and levels in his Thievery skill.

There are three skills for lockpicking that should be acquired with perk points as soon as they are available if you want to become the best safe cracker possible.

Tool Master

Tool Master is available at Thievery level 8. This perk makes all your lockpicks last 15% longer before breaking, so it’s an extremely worthy perk to choose as you’re learning the ropes.

Additionally, Tool Master returns one extra lockpick to your inventory after a successfully cracked lock that took more than one lockpick to open.

Mischief Artist

Available from level 14, Mischief Artist gives you a short-term boost to Thievery and Stealth for 120 seconds after a successfully picked lock.

If you’re going on a crime spree and need to open several successive locks at once, this perk is a huge aid.

Master Thief

Master Thief will take some grinding as a burglar to finally unlock at level 18, but it’s the best perk you can earn as a now-hardened criminal.

This allows lower-level locks to be opened immediately without the use of a lockpick or the need to even complete the lockpicking mini-game.
