After soaring withAvengers: Endgame, Marvel has come close to face-planting more than a few times. Be it with the films that were released in the wake ofSpider-Man: Far From Home, or the many shows that made landfall on Disney+, Kevin Feige might have gotten a little too cocky after toppling James Cameron’sAvatarfrom the top spot, way back in 2019.

However, one of the major things that the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel Studios got so wrong was its maiden animated series,What If…?A show that was focused on exploring some of the wildest realities of the Marvel multiverse with familiar characters could have been so much more than it was. In fact, fans have narrowed the main issue with the show down to one problem that ruined what the show had to offer.
What If…?ruined its premise with an overarching narrative
One of the main issues withWhat If…?was that the show, for whatever reason, decided that it was in its best interests to have a connected story that would tie the various scenarios that it presented together. However, what it ended up doing was limiting the show’s bandwidth, which was already tied down by the fact that each episode had to branch out from an existing story. This was unlike DC’sElseworlds, to which Marvel’sWhat If…?line of stories are often compared.

WhileElseworldscould be wild and very much out there,What If…?often had to justify its stories by being rooted in narratives that had already played out, functioning as an alternate history rather than a reimagining. Connecting each episode to an overarching story further limited the scope of the show, which eventually led toWhat If…?losing its charm and its sense of wonder, which stemmed from it not being rooted in one narrative or the other.
What If…?should have been an anthology series
What If…?promised a lot to its audience, but the way the show went about unfolding its story left a lot to be desired. Had the stories that the show delved into left unconnected, there could have been a lot more time to explore the more interesting aspect of each story, rather than building a narrative that ultimately ended up being not very interesting.
One What If…? Universe Redeemed Tony Stark’s Relationship With His Father Unlike Robert Downey Jr’s Civil War
For example, had the show been an anthology series, there could have been a focus on Peggy Carter’s tenure as Captain Carter in the modern world, given that her version of the Avengers had a very different lineup compared to what audiences saw in 2012. Instead, the focus was on advancing her story, which continued from Season 1, and tied into the the wider narrative thatWhat If…?had in place.
Marvel might have decided to wrap up the series for now, but it must be noted that it lost a lot of its essence in its translation to the screen from the comics. Given that Marvel didn’t even have all of its characters to play around with in the multiverse, it would not be surprising if Marvel brought the IP back with no overarching narrative, featuringThe Fantastic Four and the X-Menas well.

What If…?Season 3 can be streamed on Disney+
