Star Wars: Skeleton Crewis finally here with the pirate-themed space opera series adding a new flavor to the galaxy far, far away. The series was created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford and received mostly positive reviews. During a recent interview, Watts spoke about some of the influences behind the series, admitting to being inspired by creator George Lucas.

In the interview, Watts talked about being influenced by the same sources that inspired Lucas when he was preparing to launch his space opera franchise back in the 1970s. As a result, it is endearing to see Watts follow in Lucas’ footsteps while also trying to leave his own imprint on the saga, and here is what the filmmaker had to say.

Skeleton Crewis a brand new addition to theStar Warsuniverse. The series follows a group of children lost in space, seeking their way home. It was created byJon Wattsand Christopher Ford. Watts recently sat down for a chat withThe Gamerand discussed the creative process behind the series.

During the interview, Watts was asked about the influences behind the series. The filmmaker revealed that during his conversations with Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni, he learned that the key was not to imitate franchise creatorGeorge Lucas.

You try to go back to the core influences that influenced George. For us, it was like going back to an era of movies where kids stories were taken seriously, plus pirates.

Watts made the above statement, explaining that like Lucas, he too tried to draw inspiration from the classic children’s serials from the 1930s.

Lucas famously drew inspiration from his love of theFlash Gordonserials while conceptualizingStar Wars. Similarly, Watts was inspired by the pirate serials and movies, resulting ina unique product that belongs in the galaxy far, far awaywhile also being able to distinguish itself from the other entries.

In the same interview, Watts reflected on how working with multiple directors influenced the show’s creative process. The filmmaker rose to prominence withhis work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing all three installments of the Tom Holland-ledSpider-Manfranchise.

Watts revealed that he tried to emulate the freedom he received during his MCU days while working with multiple directors on the series. The director stated:

I wanted to afford the same luxury to our directors.

Watts added that since most of the directors he worked with had grown up watching the same movies and shared influences, it was easy for them to bond and work towards one creative vision.
