In an interview with Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, Isayama revealed that the setting ofAttack on Titanwas influenced by Joaquin Phoenix starrer‘The Village’. With a whopping box office of over $256 Million, the movie divided its fandom because of its controversial ending. Isn’t this reminiscent of a certain manga series? Even beyond their controversial endings, these two works of fiction share a lot of similarities which are quite interesting.

The Setting OfAttack on TitanWas Greatly influenced byThe Village

(Spoiler Warning forThe Village)

The Village, the movie, is set in a village isolated from the rest of the world. Some mysterious and sinister creatures lurk in the wood surrounding the village, preventing it’s inhabitants to explore the outside world. Later on, we discover that the village is a facade created by some elders to protect themselves from the sorrows of the world. The creatures are humans in disguise, posing a threat to anyone who dares to leave. In the end, this farce continues without anyone finding out the truth.

Upon hearing the plot of the movie, it becomes clear what influencedHajime Isayamain creating the world ofAttack on Titan. Recollecting everything he managed to with a seemingly simple and similar setting is mind-blowing.  He added several elements into the story since the very beginning, like misleading the audience to believe thatAttack on Titanis a story of humans vs. titans.

Building upon that simple idea, he introduced the first twist with the Titan shifters. And then he added the basement twist, the genesis of titans, and eventually led us to the most devastating war of all time. Alongside the multitude of themes, he introduced various ideologies and motivations that forced every reader to question the state of things. But to circle back a little, it all started with a village.
