While we’ve seencountless game developers lose their jobsthis year, the gaming executives usually come out of each studio bloodletting scot-free. Not only that, but these same game execs usually have bloated salaries that will make your blood boil when you hear how much they make.

One gaming company in Japan is looking to change how its gaming executives are paid, and frankly, I hope this is something we see happen worldwide (though I doubt it’ll ever happen).

Bandai Namco Changes Executive Salaries To Match Their Performance

Bandai Namco Holdingsannouncedon May 8 (translated byAutomaton) that they are changing the salaries of their executives to be more dependent on how they perform.

The fixed salary will now make up only about 30% of an executive’s pay, while the remaining 70% will be performance-based. The previous ratio was 40:60, which means 10% of the base pay was reduced to make it more dependent on what these executives bring to the company. In addition to that, 50% of executive officers' total earnings will be stock-based instead of cash, with the goal of pushing for these executives to act in the interest of company shareholders.

The base salary of Bandai Namco’s executives will be capped at $4.14 million per year in total, and a portion of it will go into a shareholding plan to purchase company stock. As for bonuses, it will depend on how Banda Namco meets its targets related to profits. If the company goals aren’t met, executives might not get bonuses at all. The total amount of bonus payments are capped at $4.14 million or 1.5% of net income attributable to shareholders for the year (whichever is lower).

This publisher doesn’t mess about.

This is definitely a good move, and one that other companies should follow, though the chances of US gaming companies following it are slim to none. For now, game developers need to suck it up, and we just need to feign like these gaming executivesaren’t significantly overpaid.

Should other gaming companies follow suit and will this somehow put the brakes onstudios closing left and right?
