However, along with the hype comes conversations and debates about the resemblance of the Wind Traders to the Air Nomads fromAvatar: The Last Airbender. Is James Cameron just drawing inspiration or is he outright copying them? Let’s explore this further.

Are the Wind Traders the same as the Air Nomads?

Back in 2009 whenJames Cameron’sAvatarwas first released, the title itself caused a lot of confusion and since he owned the rights to the nameAvatar,Nickelodeonhad to change their title toAvatar: The Last Airbenderinstead. Now, in an interview withEmpire, Cameron described Wind Traders as,

They’re nomadic traders, equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages. And you know, they’re just fun. Like all Na’vi, they live in a symbiosis with their creatures. If you’ve got any nautical blood in your veins, you’ll want to be on their ship.

Fans of both franchises are already noticing striking similarities between the Wind Traders and the Air Nomads ofAvatar: The Last Airbender, further fueling long-standing debates about the originality of Cameron’s sci-fi franchise.

According to the Cameron, the Wind Traders are going to be fun. Before the Air Nomads were killed by the Fire Nation, Aang was shown to be light-hearted and adventurous. Fans find a striking similarity between the the Aang general behavior and the way Cameron described the Wind Traders are going to be.

Even their design choices, based on concept art featured in Empire, seem to be similar. The Wind Traders’ colorful, flowy attire and the creatures they ride evoke the aesthetic of the Air Nomads.

For fans ofThe Last Airbender, the resemblance is almost too on-the-nose. Cameron’s attempt to create a unique Pandoran culture feels like a copy instead of a potential inspiration drawn from the film. So what’s next? The Earth nation? Only time will tell.

What can be expected from Avatar: Fire and Ash?

Avatar: Fire and Ashpromises to take audiences into uncharted territory on Pandora, introducing the Ash Clan. They are said to be a hardened group shaped by immense hardship, led byOona Chaplin’s Varang.

The Ash Clan is depicted as a morally complex faction. They are willing to take drastic measures for survival. This depiction will further show the hardships faced by the Na’vi and opens the franchise up to more complex storylines.

Unlike previous films, this installment explores moral ambiguity, breaking away from the good and bad narrative that was shown in the first two movies. James Cameron even said in his interview,

We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm.

To add to the buzz, the Wind Traders will bring a fresh perspective, soaring through Pandora’s skies on majestic creatures. Earlier, James Cameron revealed to the community thatthe first two films were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. Hence, fans are excited to see what’s to come in the future.
