During an interview, Korsh explained why it was difficult to bring Torres back for the series finale. The showrunner revealed that her spin-off series presented a difficult challenge to the writers, which made it impossible to bring the character back into the fold for a fitting ending. However, what transpired left Torres’ character with arguably the worst fate of all the original main cast members.

Showrunner Aaron Korsh Explained Why Gina Torres Did Not Return ForSuitsFinale

Suitsaired for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019 before bidding adieu to loyal viewers. However, the series later gained popularity when it dropped on Netflix, leading to the development ofan LA-based spin-off. Before that, the show birthed another spin-off, focusing onGina Torresas Jessica Lourdes Pearson.

Following a backdoor pilot in season 7, Torres was written out of the main series so she could lead the spin-offPearson. However, in an interview withEntertainment Weekly, showrunnerAaron Korshconfirmed that the spin-off held Torres back from reprising her role in the series finale ofSuits. He said:

It was a very difficult process of deciding how to handle Jessica in the Suits thing. Look, if Pearson didn’t exist, I would’ve had Jessica come in and help them get rid of Faye.

Korsh explained that since both the shows were airing back-to-back on the same night, it posed a problem for Jessica Pearson’s inclusion in theSuitsfinale, primarily since it would have given viewers a whiplash effect.

The showrunner further added that having Pearson attend Harvey and Donna’s wedding while dealing with her own legal troubles in the spin-off on the same night would have compromised the spin-off’s integrity. He stated:

It would lose the credibility that Pearson had. We worked very hard on that show and I was so proud of it, and that was the struggle. I just didn’t want to mess with the integrity of Pearson to service Suits.

From Korsh’s words, it is evident that the showrunner did not want to compromise the narrative ofPearson, by including the titular character in the finale despite her storyline taking place parallelly alongside the finale’s events, making it difficult to include Torres in the epiosde.

During the same interview, Korsh also revealed that the writers had planned for Torres to have a cameo in the finale, having one final phone conversation withHarvey Specter, and sharing a mentor-mentee moment to cap off her time. However, by the time the scene was written, production on the first season ofPearsonhad wrapped.

Korsh revealed that the scene remained unfilmed as the sets for the spin-off series had been dismantled. Moreover, Pearson aired its season finale a week before the final episode, preventing the overlap Korsh had feared and prevented him from including Torres in the finale.
