After spending a glorious twenty years in the WWE, Kurt Angle decided to hang up his boots with a match against Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35 in April 2019. But fans were left shaking their heads, dreaming of a more poetic send-off of the star against John Cena, the very same Superstar who faced Angle in his debut match back in 2002.

And guess what? It turns out Angle was just as bummed about it! He revealed he had his heart set on a showdown with the 16-time World Champion for his final bout, while Vince McMahon had other plans for the wrestler.
Why Vince McMahon Didn’t Allow Kurt Angle to Face John Cena in His Retirement Match?
Kurt Angle, the Olympic gold medalist, officially wrapped up his legendary wrestling career in April 2019 at WrestleMania 35, where he faced Baron Corbin in a singles match. Fans famously erupted with chants of“We want Cena!”However, as time has passed, despite the saying that time heals all wounds, it seems this one hasn’t quite healed.
WithJohn Cenanow gearing up for his ownRetirement Tourin 2025, fans can’t help but dream of an epic showdown between these two legends.

During a recent episode of theNotsam Wrestlingpodcast, host Sam Roberts asked Angle if he’d consider stepping back into the ring to right the wrong. The icon thus revealed the real plan all along, the one he had always imagined! Cena as his final opponent! But at the time, Vince McMahon had other ideas. He explained,
I mean, I’m the one [with whom] he had his first match. I wanted John [Cena] to be my retirement match. I don’t know if you knew that, but I requested that to Vince [McMahon]. ‘You’re gonna have to wait till next year because you have a program with Baron Corbin.’ So I was like, ‘Okay! I don’t think I can go another year, Vince!’ He said, Well, then it is what it is!’

Just because WWE built up the rivalry between Baron Corbin and Kurt Angle, it was crucial for it to have a satisfying conclusion. That’s why Angle revealed that the plans couldn’t be changed at the last minute; otherwise, it would have looked absurd.
However if one looks at the bigger picture, while Kurt Angle holds a deep appreciation for Corbin, it felt like a missed opportunity to have his final match against Cena, the very man who kicked off his own career in the ring.

This choice has gone down as one of the most disappointing decisions in wrestling lore. Even though Angle’s farewell match was a memorable spectacle, fans still dream of witnessing one last epic clash between these two legends before the final curtain falls.
Could John Cena vs. Kurt Angle Still Happen?
However, what’s done is done, but could it still happen? With Cena gearing up for his return, fans can’t help but wonder if Angle might make aone-time comebackto face him and rectify that missed opportunity.

Angle has openly shared his enthusiasm for being part of one of Cena’s final shows, expressing a desire to step back into the spotlight, even if just for a moment. It would be a fitting way to bring their story full circle, creating a moment that fans have been yearning for. In the same podcast interview, he stated,
Listen, I’m sure if I made a call, I could make it happen. But there’s no way I can do it. But I would love to, you know, be one of John Cena’s retirement matches

While nothing has been confirmed yet, there’s a possibility it could happen. However, Angle has acknowledged that he’s not in the best physical shape to compete. Still, he appears eager to find a way to be part of Cena’s retirement journey. It’s clear he wants this just as much as the fans do! Only time will tell if fans will get to witness these two Titans clash one last time.
