One of the most intriguing characters inGame of Thrones, the red priestess Melisandre played a crucial part in George R.R. Martin’s story. Portrayed by Dutch actress Carice Van Houten, she was a prominent figure in the show who worships the Lord of Light and became the advisor to Stannis Baratheon.

Despite her lengthy journey in the show, Melisandre never met Cersei Lannister, which was a massive disappointment for fans. Even the actress was bummed that her character never got to share what would have been an iconic interaction between the Red Witch and the Lady of Casterly Rock.
Carice Van Houten hoped for a Melisandre and Cersei Lannister showdown
Game of Throneswrapped up in 2019 with a controversial anticlimactic ending, and while most fans were devastated by how the story panned out, no one was more disappointed thanCarice Van Houten, at least in one aspect. She expressed frustration over the show’s missed chance of bringing Melisandre and Cersei Lannister together in one frame (viaCountry and Town Housemagazine):
It’s a real shame there aren’t any scenes between them, but the storylines just didn’t come together. It was a missed opportunity I think – it would have been really interesting to see that they got on as women as opposed to just fighting, because they’re not that different, they’re both loners.

The 48-year-old star wanted to share the screen withLena Headey, but since the show’s narrative did not allow their characters to intersect paths, the chance was left to fans’ wishful thinking.
Like the audience, Van Houten was also curious to see how well (or not-so-well) their meeting would end up. In fact, she thought they were a good combination, and to see the Red Woman take on the villain of King’s Landing is an epic clash that we would never witness.

On a more interesting part, the Dutch actress revealed she was asked to audition for Cersei before landing on the priestess role. “I thought the queen would be a great part, and [the producers] asked me to audition,” she toldVulture. She failed to do so due to scheduling conflicts, but we know things happen for a reason, and we cannot deny that Headey was destined for the role.
Melisandre and Cersei Lannister dining together inGame of Throneswould have been a dream
Van Houten said in a video interview withVanity Fairthat she wants to have dinner, as her character, with Headey’s Cersei. From this pitch alone, fans can already tell they will have the most intense, underhanded comments at the dining table.
Lena Headey: “I never saw that coming in a million years” on Cersei’s Single Greatest Game of Thrones Moment
Either she would say something cryptic or ominous, or mentionCersei’s prophecythat would spook the queen. Viewers can only imagine how the Lannister royalty would react to this, so it’s definitely a huge missed opportunity that we never see them cross paths in the series.
Game of Thronesis currently available to watch on HBO.
