AmongJujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and other modern popular anime titles, Tatsuya Endo’sSpy x Familystands out with its distinct appeal. It’s a great mix of action, comedy, dark themes, and all things wholesome. When one thinks ofSpy x Family, the first aspect that comes to mind are the characters. They are the heart and soul of the engaging narrative in the manga.

However, the versions of them that we got to see in the series were a result of some persuasion from Endo’s editor, especially in Loid’s case. Loid Forger wouldn’t have been as much of an embodiment of perfection if it wasn’t for the editor of the series, Shihei Lin.
The secret behind Loid’s handsome appearance inSpy x Family
From being the perfect spy in disguise to the most reliable man when the world needs saving, Loid Forger is perfect no matter what is expected of him. His great qualities include his dedication to his mission, his expertise in all subjects known to mankind, and the way he looks out for Anya and Yor. Although superficially speaking, he’s a visual delight and his handsomeness is undoubtedly a substantial part of his overall appeal.
Tatsuya Endowas seemingly always against drawing hot guys, as shared by Amu (the creator ofKono Oto Tomare)during an interview. Endo would go out of his way to avoid creating conventionally good-looking characters during the serialization ofBlade of the Moon Princess.

Loid Could Have Almost Abandoned Spy x Family’s Main Mission for Selfish Reasons Until One Character Changed His Mind
Both Amu and Katsuya Kato (the creator ofBlue Exorcist) were excited to see that Endo finally created a handsome character inSpy x Family. Shihei Lin, the editor of the series shared how he had always told Endo to create characters like that. He said:
I have been suggesting the same for as long as I can remember, (laughs) I always tell him, “In manga, it’s important to have characters who are cool or cute.”

So, it were the efforts of the mangaka’s contemporaries and his editor that led to the creation of Loid. Endo responded to this conversation in a jestful manner by saying thatbecause he was forced to compromiseso much, he doesn’t feel any attachment to the characters.
Moreover, he shared that he has begun to find kids and dogs cute, who he initially thought were devious. So, it seems like Endo has come a long way andSpy x Familyis the manifestation of all the changes he has gone through over the years.

Spy x Familyis a testament to Tatsuya Endo’s genius
Spy x Familyis wholesome and light-hearted on the surface, but there are many dark themesthat complete the picture. The central trio have their fair share of tragic and traumatic experiences which introduce fear and some insecurities in their life. It’s extremely rewarding to see them overcome those inhibitions with the help of the family they’ve found in each other.
The layered narrative ofSpy x Familybinds this fictional family to the extremely real atrocities of war, creating a poignantly fun and wholesome experience in the process. Endo has done a brilliant job in balancing the dark and wholesome elements, without letting the dread take over or undermining the seriousness of the situation. And extra points to the mangaka for giving us the perfect character to swoon over with Loid!

Spy x Familyis available to stream on Crunchyroll.
