Stallone made his transition to long-form storytelling with Taylor Sheridan’sTulsa King. His role as the aged criminal out to establish a new empire in Tulsa won applause from audiences. However, his character’s relationship with Andrea Savage’s character received some criticism, particularly their love scene. However Savage defended the scene because it hilariously calls out the elephant in the room that rarely gets addressed.

The duo flirted with each other and even have s*x, with Savage’s character not knowing that Stallone is on the wrong side of the law. She slowly realizes who Dwight is and even his real age (he is 75), which horrifies her. Savage’s character directly confronts Dwight about his age and the scene is one of the standouts of the whole series. However, some audiences found their relationship and the scene weird and awkward, owing to the two actors’ age difference (27 years).

What fans failed to realize was that the point of the scene was to call that aspect out. In an interview withVulture, Savage revealed that she and writer Terence Winter frequently discussed the scene and both felt it was necessary to be in the show. Winter also points out that the scene sarcastically addresses the criticism that fans had. They said,

Terry and I talked about that when I got the script. It needed to be in there, you know? I couldn’t let that be one of those moments, because that drives me insane as well… Sly even talks about it. He loves the idea that he can’t believe he’s 75 either. He’s just as shocked as she is, in some ways. He certainly doesn’t look like he’s 75 or act like he’s 75. He has the gait of a 35-year-old.

The scene is indeed hilarious asStallone‘s character himself does not believe he is 75 while Savage’s character is shocked by the revelation. The whole scenario is treated in such a darkly comical yet brilliant manner that sets up the animosity that develops between them.

The changes he suggested were only for what felt right for the character and Winter was extremely happy with how much theRambostar cared for the material. He said,

It’s great when they’re good at it — when you’re with actors who can [write] well. None of the changes [Stallone] suggested were born of, ‘This doesn’t make me look cool, I want to look cooler.’ It was all about: ‘This is right for the character.’ […] It was really refreshing to work with somebody who just cares about the material.
