Someone needs to kick some sense into Warner Bros. when it comes to promoting their films, especially after the lackluster turnout forThe Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The animated film from Peter Jackson’s acclaimed Middle-earth saga dropped a promising trailer a few months ago. The film has hit select overseas markets, including Spain, Mexico, and Brazil, but the reception has been underwhelming.

Fans are not happy about the studio’s attitude toward the project after reports suggest that the film only made $2 million on its debut. The events of the film are set 183 years before the original film trilogy and it explores the story of the King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand, and his daughter Héra.

Fans Turn Against WB After They Fail To PromoteThe Lord of the RingsAnimated Film

J.R.R. Tolkienwrote the story of King Helm Hammerhand of Rohan in the appendices ofThe Lord of the Rings. New Line Cinema joined forces with Warner Bros. Animation to adapt this storyline into an animated film and the project dropped its trailer in August. Fans were not much into the project up until then but thetrailer surely got fans of the original films excited.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrimhasn’t made much noise since its promisingtrailer. Fans were shocked to learn that the film had already debuted in a few overseas markets without any buzz. When they learned that the initial box office numbers from the international market only amounted to $2 million (via Variety), fans were angry at Warner Bros. Pictures who took up the distribution.

The film is set to release in an additional 43 markets, including the United States, on December 13, but fans hardly see any promotion being done for the film. It appears that WB has given up on the film and hesitates to spend another dollar on the film’s marketing.

One fan took to X to mention that the animated film really caught their attention and that it was sad WB wasn’t bothering to promote the film. Another fan pointed out how WB always fumbled with their animation films except for theLegomovies. Some of the fan reactions read:

I’ve never seen any of the live action films/shows before ,but this animated film really caught my attention it looks really interesting it just sucks how WB isn’t bothering to promote it.

The marketing was terrible.

Yeah, they really blew this one.

Why does Warner Bros animation always fails at the box office (except lego movies)🤔 not a single hit in so many years, yet they have so many good IPs whole Hannah barbara roaster still no success. I hope this changes with DC studios movies 🤞

Warner Bros. has had a history of doing a bad job when it comes to promoting IP projects. The studio’s failures in IP projects can be seen withThe Matrix Resurrectionsand theHarry Potterspin-offs underFantastic Beaststrilogy. The studio famously blew its chances with Christopher Nolan after doing a bad job withTenet‘s promotions.

The two will lead a resistance against a sudden attack by Wulf, a ruthless Dunlending lord. Kenji Kamiyama, known for the Ghost in the Shell series, was roped in as the director of the film. It appears that Wise’s Héra will probably be the first sword-wielding female protagonist in Tolkien’s world.

It was evident from the trailer that anime and Middle Earth were the perfect blend for the film. The trailer captured the stunning visuals of the world like its live-action counterpart.Peter Jacksonand Phillippa Boyens, who co-wrote the original trilogy, are back as executive producers.
