Despite this film not being a superhero film by either Marvel Studios or DC Studios, Christopher Nolan’sOppenheimerwas arguably one of, if not the biggest hit in the film industry last year, surpassing expectations on both the critical and commercial scale. This was on top of the fact that it was an astonishingly long film with a run time of three hours in today’s trend of short-form content.

Thus, when filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, the director of the upcomingDune: Part Twowas asked whether he was concerned his project was almost the same length as his peer’s latest classic, he said he wasn’t too perturbed about it, in fact, he was confident about it even more.
He said that despite his claims that good films do not need much dialogue, they were proven wrong with Nolan’s film, and yet again, the duration of this project was only enjoyed by the public.

During these times when everything related to short-form is popular, the filmmaker has seen that films are something that retain the public’s interest proportionately to how long it is. And if the movie is good, then naturally, it will become a superhit no matter its length.

Taking an example of theInceptiondirector’s latest film, Villeneuve said that it was a three-hour long dialogue-heavy film, which he believes good films need minimal dialogues, and still it managed to become so popular with the youth today (viaThe Times). He said:
“I trust the audience, this story’s too dense. I would never make ‘Dune’ as one movie. This was the only way I could succeed. Also, think of Oppenheimer.It is a three-hour,rated-Rmovie aboutnuclear physicsthat is mostly talking.But the public was young — that was the movie of the year by far for my kids. There is a trend. The youth love to watch long movies because if they pay, they want to see something substantial. They are craving meaningful content.”

Thus, with the film soon to be released in theatres, it will be exciting to watch what the public reception to this project.
