The hit sitcomModern Familyhas introduced several beloved characters throughout its run, many of whom have become quite iconic, such as Sofia Vergara’s Gloria and Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy. Phil, in particular, is often celebrated as one of TV’s best dads, known for his goofy and fun-loving nature.

However, despite the show’s efforts to portray him in the best light, there are several aspects of his character that can be seen as problematic. One example occurs in Season 6 when, instead of stepping up himself, he repeatedly shifts the responsibility onto Claire regarding Alex’s overwhelming pressure over her test.
Modern Family’sunfair attempt at painting Phil Dunphy in a good light
Portrayed byTy Burrell, Phil Dunphy is undoubtedly one of the most beloved characters onModern Family. Fans appreciate his goofy, fun-loving nature and his role as a supportive father. However, certain aspects of Phil’s character can be problematic.
Throughout the show, Alex is oftenoverlooked by both her parents, who are assured that she will be alright on her own. However, Episode 7 of Season 6, puts a much further emphasis on how dismissive both Phil and Claire were toward her.

The episode, titled,Queer Eyes, Full Hearts, follows Claire as she becomes preoccupied with Haley’s possible relationship with Andy. Meanwhile, Phil notices that Alex is under immense pressure, losing sleep while preparing for an important test.
The next morning, Phil expresses concern, pointing out that Alex hasn’t slept in three nights. However, Claire, more focused on Haley’s situation, reassures him that Alex will be fine.

By the end of the show, Alex comes stumbling to her parents, saying,“The words on the page are vibrating and I can’t make them stop. I forgot how to read!”Finally realizing the intense pressure she has been under, Claire takes her to get some sleep.

However, the episode fails to acknowledge the real issue once again, shifting focus to Phil being“right”all along. His reaction—“Yes, you were wrong about everything!”—turns the moment into a victory for him rather than an opportunity to explore his responsibilities as a father.
Fans notice Phil’s underwhelming Dad behavior inModern Family
Despite him being one of the most beloved character, opinions on Phil Dunphy are mixed. While many enjoy his goofy, fun-loving persona, some argue itoften paints Claire as the strict parent.Others criticize his lack of support in parenting, leavingClaire to handle most responsibilities, even after she started working.
And the same has been the case with the Season 6 episode, where fans criticized Phil for noticing Alex’s struggles but doing little to actually help her. Instead of taking action, he repeatedly pointed out the issue to Claire, who was too distracted by Haley’s relationship to address it.

“It bothers me so much,”aReddituser noted as they explained,“Yes, he was right that Alex was struggling, but all he did to address it was tell Claire about it.”
Although Phil did attempt to check on Alex through an alarm (which she later turned off), the episode still didn’t sit well with many viewers, as it reinforced the ongoing pattern of Phil and Claire overlooking Alex’s struggles until she finally reached a breaking point.

And their neglect becomes even more concerning, especially considering Alex had a meltdown in Season 5 episode,Under Pressure. The episode sheds light on how alone she often feels. And after attending the open house, Claire eventually realizes the extent of Alex’s burden and acknowledges it, causing her to break down.
“That’s very realistic to how most parents function”: ‘Modern Family’ Made Julie Bowen’s Claire Take the Fall When Phil Was Equally a Bad Parent
However,Queer Eyes, Full Heartsdisregards that previous character development in terms of Phil and Claire addressing her struggles. The missed opportunity frustrated fans, as it reinforced the idea that both parents continuously overlooked Alex.
Modern Familyis available to watch on Hulu.
