But that is changing rapidly. The government of Japan has finally taken a historic declaration that promises to break the perception of manga and anime forever. These popular art forms are now ready to blast into the limelight of cultural importance and academic pursuits. Through this project, Japan recognizes the outstanding influence and long-term impact that these world-famous manga and anime industries have made.

A National Archive Only For Anime & Manga Art Materials!

On 30 September, a discussion was hosted by the Japanese Government with some industry legends, such as Hideaki Anno and manga super-star Machiko Satonaka. In this meeting, the most ambitious project in the Japanese Art industry had been set in stone: The creation of a national archive only for anime and manga art materials!

This would create a treasure trove for conservators and researchers on the aspects of restoring anime cels and manga genga. The archive will include all the hand-drawn originals with minute details, that paved their way towards the library of published comics. To ensure that the integrity of the archive will remain intact, an organization of experienced specialists will be engaged to preserve such delicate materials. This will mostly contribute to the interests of anime and manga, which are appreciated for their outstanding value in Japanese culture.

Why The Sudden Rush of Storing Japanese Comics & Animations as National Treasures?

Decades of ignorance took a terrible toll on the preservation of anime and manga history. A lot of original artworks from the 1980s were carelessly tossed away as industrial waste after the show had been already aired. Yet, all hope is still not lost. Although massive losses have been already seen, the Japanese government has now stepped in to protect the rest.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs, under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, has undertaken this crucial mission to preserve the remaining fragments of anime and manga’s heritage. The archive will promote the originality of these remaining pieces and thus will serve to train the next generations to gain knowledge and reflect on Japan’s cultural treasures.

A place for the archive is still in the discussion stage, but preliminary drafts indicate it will be housed at the National Film Archive’s Sagamihara Branch. Tentatively, within the next six years, this plan will become a reality.
