Melissa Fumero’s role inBrooklyn Nine-Ninewas iconic for several reasons. Playing the role of Amy Santiago, fans got to see her embody one of the most beloved characters from the series and become their favorite Type-A personality. Although many know of the actress after she got this role, the story of how this happened is almost just as entertaining as the series.

After working on soap operas and small roles in small-budget projects for years, Fumero got the opportunity to audition alongside the legendary Andy Samberg in a show that could become highly televised. While many would expect the actress to be nothing but excited, she couldn’t help but experience the whole range of human emotions.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was just like another audition, and then I had a callback. And I remember the callback was like right around the holidays and then nothing. Got a call in January-February, “You’re screen testing for the Andy Samberg pilot.” and I was like, “Oh my gosh, amazing!.” I went into it like, “There’s no way this is happening.”
However, she ended up getting a callback for another test. Despite the signs pointing that she was in the lead for the role and wanting to celebrate the possibility, Fumero did not want to think too much into it, for fear of being disappointed.
