Tom Hardy portrayed the character of Eddie Brock in Sony’sVenomfranchise for six whole years. While the star is known for playing rugged characters on screen, it was his first time being part of a superhero franchise. Needless to say, he won over the fans very quickly with his fantastic performance.

Tom Hardy as Venom

As such, questions about his experience and preparation for the role have hounded the fans for a long time. Surprisingly, Hardy admitted in an interview that he wasn’t quite sold on the idea at first. What changed his perspective, though, was none other than his son.

His son was the one to properly introduce him to the character, and so when he got the script for the movie, the tug of war between the primal and logical self drew him in, and hence the titular character came alive on screen with his hard-hitting performance.

Tom Hardy claimed his son was a major force behind him choosingVenom

Tom Hardyis one of the most impactful actors of current times. Obviously, for very good reason as his filmography ranges fromInception,The Revenant,Dunkirk, toPeaky Blinders. As such, although his phenomenal acting as Eddie Brock in the Venom franchise awed people, it didn’t come as a shock. What is shocking, however, is that he was never a big superhero fan.

So his introduction to the famous anti-hero was only in name for the longest time. Ahead of the release of the firstVenommovie in 2018, he appeared in an interview withScreen Rant. There, he divulged that he knew the character from the comic books of his childhood days, but that is where it ended.

Although he recalled that he thought if he ever had to read a superhero comic, he would be picking up Venom’s book, as the character“looks way cooler than Spider-Man”.

According to theBlack Hawk Downstar, his son was the one to“initiate”him into the world, and that’s how he became a fan. However, things changed for him when he got the script for the movie.

For me the initial draw was the interaction, the dynamic between Eddie Brock and the symbiote.  And the inner conflict and the struggle between primal need which is the Venom. ‘When do we eat? The earth is an all you may eat buffet and why can I not do as I wish whenever I want.’ And Eddie Brock, who has very few scruples trying to create an ethical framework in order to negotiate the terms of this alien living inside of him.

He noted that the project being a Marvel movie, obviously helped make the final decision, but that’s where the initial draw came from. If anything, fans think that his initial motivation was what made him so apt for the character, as he went above and beyond portraying the struggle between the two selves.

Venomis one of the mostsuccessful movies of the Sony Spider-Man Spin-off Universewith over $856 million (Box Office Mojo) box office collection and is a testament to that.

Tom Hardy stated he took inspiration from his own mental health struggles to prepare for the role

Fans are aware that Tom Hardy has had a lot of mental health struggles throughout his glorious career. As such, he stated in the interview that although he never studied paranoid schizophrenia to prepare forVenom, he had a hoard of personal experiences to refer back to.

Especially as according to him, there was nothing specifically in the movie that he would have had to reenact on that aspect.

I have an inside voice personally and my own mental health issues which was very simple to draw upon. That part of me which is nourishing or less nourishing in my actions. And then it was just to personify the one that didn’t really care, the chaos, or the self will run riot.

Tom Hardy explained that this was the aspect that symbolized Venom, who is a very advanced being as he was from outer space, but when it came to earthly interactions, it boiled down to basic survival needs.

What made it even more interesting, though, was the alien symbiote’s interaction with a human who has such a strong“ethical framework”.As such, he believes that it brought about a sort of“tortured neurosis”that he found humorous.

I would say it was more the embracement of tortured neurosis, which is hysteria, and some of… an emotional imbalance. And therefore there’s a more humorous palette.

However, he stated that he was completely aware there were a lot of people who do suffer from it. So his comments by no means attempt to mock or degrade those issues. Rumors ofTom Hardy teaming up with Tom Holland forSpider-Man 4have only added to the appreciation for hisVenomperformance among the fans.

TheVenomseries is available to stream on the Disney+.
