Former NBA star Dwyane Wade recently shared that he had been diagnosed with cancer previously. Although he seems to be doing fine now, he had to have almost half of his left kidney removed for the treatment. Wade stated that although it wasn’t easy going through that, his family was always by his side to help him through it.

Interestingly, Wade’s family life hasn’t always been smooth. Although he and his wife Gabrielle Union have been happily married for a long time, they faced quite a few bumps at the beginning of their relationship.
In fact, there was a time when their relationship almost threatened to crumble due to an incident, the impact of which they can feel even now. Wade once stated that talking that out with his now-wife was harder than even playing in the NBA finals.

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union are going strong in their marriage after over a decade. However, their relationship almost got doomed before it began properly. The couple married in 2014, but about a year or so before that, there were mighty troubles in paradise.
Although they were seemingly trying to work on it at the time, an incident almost crumbled their bond to dust. In 2013, Dwyane Wade confirmed to the public that he had fathered a child with Aja Metoyer, shortly before Xavier Zechariah Wade was born.

However, before confessing to the public, he had to come clean to Union. In an episode of Shannon Sharpe’s podcastClub Shay Shay, Wade reflected on this time of his life. He noted in the podcast that he couldn’t have gotten through that moment without his now-wife being present and sitting with him.
I tried to pu**yfoot around it. I tried to break up with her: ‘Hey, you know things has been bad lately. We’ve been having a look at this relationship.’ Anyway, I tried all that. She kept showing up.

He further noted that things haven’t been perfect, and they have had countless fights about it since then. However, they also sat with each other and talked things out even more times.

Dwyane Wade shared he had been diagnosed with cancer some time ago
In a recent episode of Dwyane Wade’s podcastThe Why With Dwayne Wade, the former NBA superstar admitted his health struggles. According to a report byPeople, his father Dwyane Wade Sr. had struggled with prostate cancer. As such, he went to get a full body checkup after having cramps in his stomach and urinary problems.
During scanning the doctors found a tumor on his kidney. While this shocked both him and his family, he made the decision to undergo surgery on 18th December 2023.

According to Wade, it was only after almost half of his left kidney was removed did the doctors concluded that the tumor had been cancerous. He admitted that through it all, his family became his pillar of strength and support.
What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree. I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me and in that process, in my weakness I found strength in my family.
He admitted that his reason for the prompt surgery was that at his age, he needed the tumor removed, so it doesn’t spread and become a bigger health issue in the future.
