The Empire Strikes BackTwist Left Mark Hamill Expecting a Boba Fett Twist

Mark Hamill‘s Luke Skywalker faces off against Darth Vader in the final moments ofThe Empire Strikes Back. The film ends with Vader emphatically revealing that he is Luke’s father. The twist was so surprising for Hamill that it left the actor second-guessing every other masked character.

On the Blu-ray audio commentary for theReturn of the Jedi, Hamill expressed his views on the twist and the revelation of Luke and Leia being siblings. The actor admitted that the twists left him so disoriented that he was expecting George Lucas to revealBoba Fettas Luke’s mother.

Mark Hamill Pitched Boba Fett as Luke Skywalker’s Mother

While Hamill expecting some sort of twist with Boba Fett’s true identity might have stemmed from the “I’m your father” twist, the actor has admitted that he was serious about the idea, at least to a certain extent.

In 2018, Hamill took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and revealed that he had pitched Fett as Luke Skywalker’s mother toGeorge Lucas. The actorwrotethe following, recalling his jestful pitch for the twist:

Natalie Portman

I once suggested it to George as the only way we could top Vader being my father.

Hamill added that he envisioned Luke’s mother working as a double agent but ultimately being on the side of the Rebels. As a result, the actor felt it made sense for Fett to be revealed as Luke’s mother.

However, Hamill admitted that Lucas hated the idea, and rightfully since the filmmaker seemingly had a rough idea of who Luke’s mother would be. Lucas returned to the franchise almost sixteen years later with the prequel trilogy which revealedNatalie Portman’s Padmé Amidalaas Luke and Leia’s mother.
