M. Night Shyamalan is only a month away from releasing his latest horror featureTrapstarring Josh Hartnett. The story of a serial killer on the backdrop of a pop concert,Traptakes a loving father-daughter duo as they navigate their way through, well… a trap. Shyamalan is best known for his out if the box stories that get fans hooked without even trying. And with Hartnett returning for a leading role after so long, fans are understandably excited.

The director though, is not devoid of criticism, as many have pointed to the fact that most of his movies do not have the best conclusion. The ending does not justify the hype the beginning and the middle create. And they are hoping Trap does not repeat the same. But if there is one thing fans cannot criticize the director of, it’s his penchant for working on original ideas.
M. Night Shyamalan Is One For Originality
M. Night Shyamalanmakes movies for people who still enjoy original ideas and aren’t bogged down with sequels. FromThe Sixth Sense(1999) to theUnbreakabletrilogy, Shyamalan has gives us some of the most favored original movies in the last few decades. And now he is trying to uphold this tradition of his withTrap.
In an industry filled with individuals focused on adding more and more projects to IPs,Shyamalanis trying to make his own place with these original movies. Instead of adding yet another cog in an already existing wheel, he is trying to make his own brand new wheel, and that is something fans are appreciative of. In a recent interview withEmpire, the director said:

I really do believe in the original movie. I want the industry to move towards more original storytelling. I think audiences would really like it. Look, I know there’s safety in IP. But it’s really important that we come to the movies and see something we’ve never seen before. I’ll keep fighting for that.
Trap Theory: M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense is a Part of the Unbreakable Universe
As he said, while there is safety in IPs, it rarely brings anything new and fresh to the table. And that’s what Shyamalan is striving for with his work, as he wants to do more original storytelling with his projects now, as well as in the future.
M. Night Shyamalan’s Pitch ForTrapWas Different
While a pitch can make or break a movie, M. Night Shyamalan’s pitch forTrapwas unusual, to say the least. While taking the story to Warner Bros, the Glass director said that the story is basically based on the idea of “what if ‘Silence of the Lambs’ happened at a Taylor Swift concert.”

Fans are also pretty excited with this approach and took to social media to express their views on the upcoming movie.
You may like or hate Shyamalan, but he does make interesting original films. Even if they don’t work. It’s original storytelling.

I’ve always wondered to myself… what if Silence of the Lambs took place at a T-Swift show?

I always support Shyamalan’s movies at the cinema even when I think I won’t like a particular movie from him.
He’s telling his own stories instead of adapting existing IPs and that’s rare and commendable in today’s IP-obsessed Hollywood
