In the early to mid-2000s, Taylor Sheridan was a recognizable face following his presence in two television series, namelyVeronica MarsandSons of Anarchy. The star though, achieved bigger popularity after taking to the written word, and earned great success as a screenwriter in several films likeSicarioand the Oscar-nominatedHell or High Waterbefore creating his magnum opus,Yellowstone.

While the celebrity’s foray into writing after stepping down from his gig inSons of Anarchycan be witnessed as a genius move on his part, his reason for changing scene was as basic and relatable as any ordinary person. The actor who was on the verge of having his first child, revealed that family life was the biggest factor in his decision to switch careers.

Taylor Sheridan Became A Writer For The Sake Of Family

After his successful stint in 2004’sVeronica Mars, Taylor Sheridan was seen in a significant recurring role in FX’s crime dramaSons of Anarchy, in which he played the no-nonsense cop David Hale in seasons 1 to 3. The actor though, quit the show after two years to change professions and become a full-time screenwriter.

This decision proved to be worth its weight in gold for the star, who went on to gain great success  as a writer in films likeSicarioand its sequel, and the Oscar-nominatedHell or High Waterwhich also earned him a nomination as well. One thing led to another, and in 2018, he created his first massive drama universe withYellowstone, whose huge acclaim gave rise to a prequel and a sequel series as well.

While his instinct to quit acting and get into writing could be viewed by audiences as a brilliant move, Sheridan’s decision was dictated by very real and practical concerns. The actor in an interview in 2016 withDP/30, revealed that making this career-changing move in an expensive town like Los Angeles while still on contract withSons of Anarchy, was a decision he took for his family and their future.

I had a very real motivation. I was having a kid and we were re-negotiating my contract on the show, and they were offering me not enough money to pay that rent we were just talking about, and I’m sitting here thinking about raising a baby in this place.

As it turned out, theVeronica Marsactor chose to take a risk at the perfect time, which then saw him excelling as a screen writer and ultimately led him down the path to creatingYellowstone.The show catapulted him into the big leagues as a full-fledged storyteller and a bonafide franchise king.

Taylor Sheridan Was Clueless About Screenplay Writing

While a few celebrities likeBen Affleckand Matt Damon have seen equal success as actors and scriptwriters, this can be a difficult proposition for many stars wanting to do the same.Taylor Sheridanproved that he could be part of this elite list by gaining huge popularity as a writer and then later, as a director.

Moving from being a popular actor to a creator behind the camera was a risky chance that he took despite having no prior knowledge about the nuances of screenplay writing. In an interview withFour Sixes Ranch, theSons of Anarchyactor spoke about the bold move that he made and how he worked towards this transition.

I learned how to screen-write by reading bad screenplays, which was basically my entire career. When I sat down to write my first screenplay, I said I have absolutely no idea how to do this. But by God, I know how not to do it. So, if I just don’t do what everyone else is doing, it’ll probably turn out okay.
