Jeff Probst with his presentation skills has managed to keep the ball rolling forSurvivor, that too for more than two decades now. But before the show, Probst had a very different life that many might not be well aware of. Before he got into the competitive reality show, the showrunner was just trying to make ends meet.

For this, he did unusual jobs in Boeing and FX, which was completely different than his current life. But these jobs also played a huge role when it came to Probst getting more hosting gigs in the industry.

Jeff Probst Did Several Unusual Jobs Before Landing Survivor

Jeff Probstis synonymous withSurvivornow and has been a loyal member of the reality show since its inception in 2000. This commitment also led to promotions and apart from his hosting duties he was made an executive producer as well as the showrunner of the show. While it’s almost impossible to imagine Probst doing anything other thanSurvivor, in the early 1990s the host did all sorts of unusual gigs to make ends meet.

In his early career, he produced and narrated marketing videos for Boeing Motion Picture/Television. While it was completely opposite to the glamorous world of Hollywood, he did so only for a paycheck. In the midst of this, his first hosting opportunity came when he joined FX to lead a half-hour show calledBackchat. In this, he had to answer letters from the network.

However, there was one major issue with this: nobody was actually watching FX when it was released and there were no letters to read. To keep the show going, the team themselves fabricated the letters and started asking random questions. While it was a low-budget show, they gave Probst a crash course in hosting. In an interview,he added“I was getting paid to learn. It was crazy, but I got a check every two weeks.”

While this was definitely not what he wanted to do in reality, a radio pitch completely changed his life. Probst had heardSurvivorcreator Mark Burnett on the radio while driving in Los Angeles. In this, the creator described the show and the crazy idea behind it as well as the grand prize money.

Realizing the interesting premise and the potential, Probst soon called his agent to secure an audition for the same.

He also tried to get some work on dating shows like 21 Questions and Winning Lines, but he was not a big name in the industry. As a result, he was not getting such big opportunities.

But his stint on Access Hollywood played a huge role when it came to Mark Burnett selecting him as a host forSurvivor. In this show,Probst was interviewing Sandra Bullock, in which he jokingly told her“Bullock’s showing a lot of cleavage today.”To this, the actress replied,“Why are you looking at my cleavage.”Probst added,“Why are you showing it to me?”Then Bullock goes“Well, unbutton yours.”
