Shark Tank has become a cultural phenomenon and an excellent opportunity for people to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. People who do not belong to the business world learn the brutal reality of business negotiations with enthusiasm. Somehow, numbers, equity, shares, and other such boring terms are now entertaining to the hundreds and thousands of viewers who tune in to watch the show with keen interest.

Watching entrepreneurs pitch their ideas and secure funding that catapults their businesses into success feels inspiring to many. But at times, the sharks, as in the investors can be disrespectful toward the innovators, and so was Kevin O’Leary in this one episode!

Kevin O’Leary’s $500k offer for Lifebelt onShark Tank

In season 1 ofShark Tank, Robert Allison entered the reality TV show with a compelling invention that he created due to the loss of a loved one in a car crash. His product was Lifebelt, a safety device designed to prevent cars from starting unless the seatbelt was fastened. He wanted $500,000 for 10% equity to scale his business.

The sharks were skeptical of his strategy andKevin O’Learypointed out that Allison was currently not making any money through the product. So he gave him a direct but cold offer of $500,000 for 100% on the patent with one condition, i.e.,“I don’t want you to call me ever again.”

Then came the first million-dollar offer in the history ofShark Tankby Robert Herjavec, who also wanted his patent but for $1 million. However, Allison was firm about his decision and wanted to manufacture the product himself. He wasn’t swayed by the million dollars and left the tank without a deal.

Why the sharks turned away and Lifebelt’s fate

Despite leavingShark Tankwithout securing investments, Lifebelt reportedly found success in the initial stages and secured a multi-million dollar deal with Gillman Automotive Group to install the device in millions of vehicles (viaShark Tank recap). However, the success was short-lived because by 2016, the company had ceased operations, and the reason remains unknown.

While the product seemed lucrative and profitable to viewers, the sharks were skeptical about Allison’s business model. For example, Barbara Corcoran happened to love the idea of Lifebelt but she was unsure of the creator’s ability to sell it.

Daymond John and Kevin Harrington also did not indulge because of the valuation, and the core conflict was Allison’s unwillingness to license the patent to car manufacturers. According to Sharks, this was the only viable path to success, and perhaps they were right, considering the company no longer exists.
