Eiichiro Oda’sOne Piecehas become a cultural phenomenon that has taken the world by storm, airing back in 1995. Since then, the series has not had to look back as it featured a mesmerizing storyline with an assorted long list of characters that fans always look up to. Monkey D. Luffy, the series’ protagonist, has grown to be infectiously popular in the Otaku community.

Aside from his goofy character that transforms into a force of nature, if his nakamas or close ones are hurt, his voice actor has done magic breathing life into him. However, the same magic is being reciprocated in the English dub of the series through Colleen Clinkenbeard, who took over the massive responsibility of voicing the Yonko back in 2007.

In these 17 years, she has done a fantastic job in bringing the character to life, along with all his traits. However, during an interview, she explained how she doesn’t possess one trait of the Straw Hat that is very rare to have.

Luffy’s English Dub VA Would Love To Have His One Major Trait

There’s no denying thatEiichiro Odahas done fabulous work designing his characters in hisOne Piece;a prime example of this notion would be how he made Monkey D. Luffy. The Emperor of the Sea has become such a huge name that even non-anime viewers recognize him.

After all, he has become a symbol of inspiration and has taught valuable life lessons to his fans that have played a key role in shaping their behavior as they grew up watching him. One such trait of the Captain of the Straw Hat Pirate is how he can keep getting knocked down by his foes again and again.

Instead, he has showcased great perseverance, where he would train himself, return stronger than ever, ensure that wins the fight, and free the land from any tyrant or unjust ruler.

During an exclusive interview withBut Why Tho, Colleen Clinkenbeard shared her take on how Luffy has been depicted as one of the bravest characters, who teaches the real meaning of“getting back and going.”She said,

Luffy can be getting his ass handed to him over and over and over again, and it’s nothing to him. He just keeps getting back up and going. ‘I gotta keep trying’. It’s like you’re able to see the gears turning in his head in these moments when he is fighting.

She explained how he’d look hard into his fights, where he would keep thinking,“What am I missing?”and how he could have“access”to it. This is something that is very“intellectual”of him.

Later, she added there’s something else that makes the viewers get so emotionally invested in the storyline masterfully penned down by Oda-Sensei and how she’d love to take his one key trait from him.

But I think that he’s so invested in this moment right now, and is not panicking about the future, and is not traumatized by the past. He’s just so invested in what is currently happening at the moment. And that is something that I can say that I’ve learned from him, because I don’t think that I am that way, but it’s something that I would like to take from him, if possible.

While Clinkenbeard would love to have the character’s trait of living in the moment, Oda-Sensei’s massive words for the protagonist showcase what he means to him.

Eiichiro Oda Loves Luffy Like a Father

Even thoughOda-Sensei is gravely ill, time and again, he has showcased how much the series means to him, where he would put his life on the line to keep his fans entertained. However, it is not just his responsibility as a manga artist, but his love for the protagonist, who has been a major part of everyone’s lives all these years.

In a separate interview viaEdomonogatari, the interviewer asked him,“What does Luffy mean to you?”Without much thought, the mangaka answered,“Luffy is my ideal child,”and added,

I wish all children could be like him. He may say some inspirational lines from time to time, but I want him to stay a kid forever. There are parts of him that remain a mystery to me, for better or worse. It’d be boring for both the readers and me if I knew everything about him.

Nevertheless, the Sun God has played a key role in all of our lives and has inspired us to achieve greater things. But most importantly, teaching us the value of never giving up and being an ideal human being who would strive to put a smile on other’s faces.
