Yoshihiro Togashi created an indelible mark on the anime-manga industry withYu Yu Hakusho, and then set it in stone withHunter x Hunter. He is highly regarded for his storytelling prowess by both his contemporaries and his fans. But despite the successful track record, he is not always eager to accept the credit that he deserves.

Whenever asked about the success of his works in interviews, Togashi seems to take the humble way out and it’s admirable. Additionally, he has a unique thought-process that makes his interviews extremely intriguing.

Togashi on the success of Weekly Shonen Jump

During the 1990’s,Yu Yu Hakushowas easily one of the most popular manga. When the Weekly Shonen Jump was making big sales,Yoshihiro Togashiwas asked about it during an exhibition. Togashi shared (via translations on reddit) that he didn’t feel like he had a role to play in it. He humbly explained how his thought process regarding the subject was quite complex.

But honestly, I didn’t feel like I was a part of it. It didn’t seem as if I played a role in that success, or that I could increase sales even more even if I worked hard enough.

Knowing that he definitely had a role to play in the success makes one question how Togashi perceived himself and the track record ofYu Yu Hakusho. Was it just humility or was he oblivious to the impact of his manga? After all, the manga was easily one of the top titles serializing at the time in the Weekly Shonen Jump. Togashi called the game of sales something that is ever-changing.

That is why he maintained some distance with the excitement of it all. He was probably just more focused on what he wanted to do every week rather than obsessing over the performance. Despite this disconnect, Togashi admired Shonen Jump as a reader as well as an artist. He expressed the feeling of belongingness with the magazine by calling it a playground.

Just like Ouji (from Yu Yu Hakusho), no matter how old I look, I’m still a child at heart, who wants to keep playing here. That’s what Shonen Jump is to me.

Togashi followed through with his desire to stay with Shonen Jump as he published  two more works with the magazine, namely,Hunter x HunterandLevel E. Both of which were adapted into anime with substantial success, and massive success inHunter x Hunter’scase.

Togashi Redefined his Style After Yu Yu Hakusho

Yoshihiro Togashi is an uncompromising visionary. He abides by the vision he has and does things in his own way, without adhering to the pre-existing customs. AfterYu Yu Hakushoended, he decided that he’ll do a manga that doesn’t receive many reader votes. Despite knowing how important the reception of the series is for survival in the Weekly Shonen Jump.

Besides the defiance, his goal with his next manga‘Level E’was to show that he had the ability to tie the narrative together, especially in an episodic manga that followed a different adventure every week. In that way, he experimented afterYu Yu Hakushoto challenge his reader’s perception of him, and it’s fair to say that he succeeded. The perception of Togashi among fans has evolved from him being a great mangaka to being one of the best out there!
