In a cover story forTHR, Taylor Sheridan revealed howYellowstonewas rejected at HBO before Paramount took it up. Sheridan shared that they rejected his casting choice of Kevin Costner, which led to a series of embarrassing events. Sheridan shared that the studio told him to get Robert Redford for John Dutton. He recalled,“They said, ‘If you can get us Robert Redford, we’ll greenlight the pilot.’”Sheridan talked to Redford and got him to say yes, only for the studio to backtrack their words. They told him,“We meant a Robert Redford type.”
After Sheridan sorted out the embarrassing misunderstanding with Redford with a little help from Lombardo, he and co-creator John Linson met with HBO execs for a crisis meeting. Sheridan recalled the condescending tone in which the execs addressed his show. He shared:

And John Linson finally asks: ‘Why don’t you want to make it?’ And the vp goes: ‘Look, it just feels so Middle America. We’re HBO, we’re avant-garde, we’re trendsetters. This feels like a step backwards. And frankly, I’ve got to be honest with you, I don’t think anyone should be living out there [in rural Montana]. It should be a park or something.’
Sheridan shared that the studio didn’t appreciate his project and took issue with strong, bold characters like Beth Dutton. Lombardo did one favor to Sheridan before stepping away from HBO and returning the script to him.
