As part of a lengthy interview withThe Guardian, Hideo Kojima gave a small bit of insight into one of his future projects, stating that “it’s almost like a new medium,” and that “if it succeeds, it will turn things around, not just in the game industry, but in the movie industry as well.” He stated that it’s something he’s wanted to make for years, but the technology “has never been sufficient, until now.”

Kojima’s current in-development projects have been the subject of rampant speculation, rumors, and teases throughout the past few months. Kojima himself had been posting a silhouetted image of an actor, which herecently revealedto be Elle Fanning, with a new caption that read “Where am I?” Geoff Keighley originallypostedthe first image himself, suggesting that whatever this project is, it could be revealed in the upcoming Game Awards show this December 8.

Some fans assume that this is the rumored sequel to 2019’s PlayStation console-exclusive Death Stranding. Norman Reedus, who plays the game’s main character, stated during an interviewabout the game back in May that they’d “just started the second one.”

Furthermore, arecently leaked documentallegedly listed all the games that were being made by PlayStation’s European teams, and one of them was a game code-named Ocean, in development at Kojima Productions. Since the original title was made with Dutch studio Guerilla Games' Decima engine, it’s not unreasonable for a Death Stranding sequel to be part of this list. And that’s not all. Kojima has recently been posting images of himself with PlayStation figureheads, such asHermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, andJim Ryan, PlayStation’s CEO.

However, this “Where am I?” project, the same project Kojima states will “turn things around,” is most likely a different one. TryHardGuides hadpreviously reportedthat Kojima was working on a horror game called Overdose. Later, Kojimaappearedon the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2022, where he announced a partnership with Xbox and stated that there was a game he’d always wanted to make, and he had had to wait a long time to create it. Citing “Microsoft’s cutting edge cloud technology,” he claimed he could now make a “never-before-seen concept;” a similar feel to what he said in The Guardian interview.

It is worth advising players to temper expectations, as Kojima has been known to make bold claims about his projects. Prior to Death Stranding’s release, he had stated the title was part of a “totally brand-new genre,” which he referred to as a ‘strand game’. Though the game’s online components were interesting, they were far from revolutionary.
