She seems to wield secrets and insights into the nature of immortality and power that have been lost to mortals for ages. As the threads of the story come together, hints and clues point to Mei’s extraordinary significance in the grand scheme of Hell’s Paradise. With her guidance, Gabimaru and his companions may just survive the terrors of Kotaku!
Mei’s Origin
About a thousand years back, Rien, the one who holds control over Kotaku Island, created the very first Tensen. She has been conducting experiments on the island for centuries to make an Elixir of Life and revive her husband, Jofuku. Mei would serve as both protector and researcher in Rien’s quest to achieve immortality with Taoism.
Throughout their existence, Mei and the younger Tensens (Gui Fa, Ju Fa, Mu Dan, Ran, Tao Fa, and Zhu Jin) have been living in seclusion on the island, guarding the secrets of immortality and awaiting the day when their creator’s ultimate goal is finally achieved. Unfortunately, Mei began to grow disillusioned with the actions of Rien, who was sacrificing the lives of Hoko in the pursuit of immortality.

As her disapproval grew stronger, she attempted to rebel against Rien and the other Tensens. She tried to stop the unethical way of producing Tan, the source of their immortality, as an act of defiance. This action led Rien to banish Mei from the Tensens' inner circle and imprison her within the island’s boundaries. After she was removed from Horai, Hoko met Mei and took her in. Under his care, Mei distanced herself and focused on living a more meaningful life.
Personality
With her round face, bright golden eyes, and bubbly personality, Mei easily captures your heart, much like Anya Forger fromSpy X Family. She is shy, often avoiding drawing attention to herself and preferring to keep a low profile. Ordinarily, Mei is not one for a lengthy conversation, and when she finally speaks, it’s to deliver a cute one-liner before turning bright red.
Despite her detached nature, Mei shows a genuine curiosity about the world and the humans she encounters, in part due to her own nature as Tensen. She is open to learning from others and can be surprisingly empathetic at times, unlike her siblings. Mei also has a strong sense of loyalty to her loved ones and the Taoist principles she upholds.

She is willing to defend her comrades, even if it means engaging in brutal combat with Tensen, as seen in Episode 9 when she fought against Zhu Jin to protect Gabimaru. However, her adherence to these principles does not preclude the possibility of change, as Mei displays a willingness to question her beliefs and actions.
The majority of our Jigokuraku characters use the power of Tao. It is a form of life energy that flows within all living beings and can be harnessed and manipulated by skilled individuals. Characters who have mastered the control of their Tao are able to perform extraordinary feats and gain access to unique abilities based on their affinity with one of the five elemental attributes:Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water.
