The filmmaker even acknowledged the potential skepticism from studio executives about Gosling’s attractiveness for the rugged role. He said,
“I’ll tell you why [I want Ryan Gosling as Rambo] I met him at a dinner, and obviously we’re opposites. He’s good-looking, I’m not. That’s how it works… You know, this is interesting. If I ever passed the baton, I’ll pass it on to him, because he loves the character.”

While Stallone believes Gosling could pull off the role, he also acknowledges the industry’s perception, the actor shared,
“I would say yes, but, I don’t know if anyone would say, Hey, he’s too good-looking to be Rambo.”

Gerwig, the director, spilled the beans, revealing how she and Gosling bonded over their admiration for the action star. She said (Uproxx),

“I love all those Rocky movies. I love [Stallone] a lot. So it was a really early thing, actually. When Ryan Gosling and I were texting a lot, we kind of both stumbled upon our mutual love of Sly Stallone. And then we were talking about his look in the ’70s and how terrific it was. And he really adorned himself as a man.”
Further, the director added,
