Ridley Scott may have expertly launched theAlienfilm franchise, but not all projects that followed his contribution to the saga were well-received by the fandom. While other creative filmmakers added to the sci-fi/horror narrative as well, Scott’s own works from the 2010s somewhat failed to deliver the impact that his original masterpiece from 1979 did.

But it seems like the franchise is on its way to seeing better days. As fans already know, filmmaker Fede Álvarez has been working tirelessly on his upcoming addition to the franchise,Alien: Romulus. And, for the record, Scott really holds theDon’t Breathehelmer in high praise in his eyes, hinting that the forthcoming installment could erase his own past missteps with the saga.
Ridley Scott is All Praise for Fede Álvarez forAlien: Romulus
Ridley Scotthanded the reign of the fan-beloved franchise to the renownedEvil Deaddirector after his 2017 installmentAlien: Covenant, and Álvarez seems to be keeping up to his expectations through the work he has done on his upcomingAlien: Romulus— on which Scott is serving as a lead producer of the project as well.
If anything, the 86-year-old mastermind seems to be greatly impressed by the 46-year-old Álvarez. This comes after a recent interview with theLos Angeles Times, during which Scott expressed his deep praise for Álvarez, saying:

The danger of all franchises is they do die unless somebody suddenly decides to pick up the mat and run down the field with a ball.Fede is a surge of energy, and I had to step back and let him do it.
Judging from his words, theGladiatordirector seems to hold his protégé in high praise, what with all his praise for filmmakerFede Álvarez‘s incredible energy shown onset.

Real Meaning Behind Alien: Romulus’ Title Has a Special Connection to the Roman Empire and Its Just as Epic as the Film Itself
But that’s not all. Thanks to the work he has already shown as the film’s director, Scott is even expecting more good works to flow from Álvarez.
As he continued to sharein the interview:
Fede had a blueprint firm in his mind, and his script was pretty clear. […] I hope Fede’s got another one up his sleeve because I think this is going to do really well. He’s got a streak of brilliance.
Of course, not only does the legendary mastermind behindBlade Runner(1982) hold high praise for Álvarez in his eyes, but he also seems to be in great admiration of the work he has done onRomulus. That said, Scott’s words seem to hint that the iconic horror helmer’s contribution to the franchise just may end uperasing his previous mistakeswith the saga.

Fede Álvarez’sAlien: RomulusMight Erase Ridley Scott’s Past Mistakes
Whilethe original film from 1979was nothing short of a sheerly brilliant piece of work, the sequels from Scott that followed —Prometheus(2012) andAlien: Covenant(2017) — ceased to amuse fans as perfectly. While the movies were major box office hits, the scores they received from critics and fans alike, especially on Rotten Tomatoes, seem to speak otherwise.
For one,Prometheushas a 73% critical and 68% audience score — which is not entirely bad, except for the reviews, one of which deems it“a mess of unresolved ideas and poorly defined beings”(viaRT). Then there’sCovenant, which has worse ratings — 65% critical and 55% audience — which has been criticized for how“relatively little [it has] to show for all that idle questioning”(viaRT).

“He devoted so much time for us”: James Cameron’s Contribution to ‘Alien: Romulus’ is a Big Reason Why It Could Be the Cult-hit That’ll Resurrect the Franchise
But now that Scott has heaped such heavy praise on Álvarez and is even expecting him to push out more and better sequels, it sounds like fans, too, just have toput their faith in theDon’t Breathedirectorand hope that whatever he brings forth from here onwards will only undo all the past mistakes met by the saga.
Alien: Romulus is set to hit the screens on 24 July 2025.
