The introduction of Robin in the ’40s kickstarted a new era of teen superhero sidekicks, aimed toward younger readers. This changed after Stan Lee conceived the idea of Spider-Man in ’62, and just a year later, the writer, alongside Jack Kirby, penned the idea of a bunch of teen mutants, who would reside in Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

This eventually contributed to the creation of Professor X, as they needed an adult figure to lead the school. However, Lee later confessed that he found the character too powerful in the beginning.
Stan Lee nerfed down Professor X to balance things out
Oftentimes, characters, who are way too overpowered, struggle to connect with viewers and readers, especially when they lack any sense of weakness. Similar was the case with Professor Xavier when Stan Lee initially penned him. While the entire reasoning behind his creation was to introduce a leader for The Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the author felt that the character“with the greatest mental power in the world”was a bit too powerful.

In order to balance it out, Lee made the character disabled,“who couldn’t move his legs. He was in a wheelchair.”(viaRolling Stone).
Then I figured, but he’d be too powerful, a guy who could do anything, who could crawl into your mind and make you do things, is too powerful. So I figured, I’ll give him a weakness, and I made him a guy who couldn’t move his legs. He was in a wheelchair. And that seemed to me to be a good balance. And that was really how it started.

This also contributed to the dynamic of Professor X’s character. and with each passing issue, the writers fleshed him out more, which cemented him as one of the most iconic Marvel figures to date.
Stan Lee named Magneto his favorite X-Men villain
Out of all the mutants,Stan Leenamed Magneto his favorite. Further elaborating on it, Lee touched on the contrast between the good mutants, the X-Men, and bad mutants, led by Magneto, a holocaust survivor, adding that he loved the ideological conflict between the two factions.

He explained:
Oh, I was just gonna say, but my favorite villain was Magneto. And I loved the idea of the X-Men being good mutants, and then we’d get a bunch of bad mutants, and we’d make it seem as if the bad mutants had a point there. The human race hated them and feared them and shunned them and was trying to get rid of them, so why should they take it laying down? Why didn’t they fight back?
WithKevin Feigealluding toMutants’ involvementin the next chapter of MCU, hopefully, the cinematic giant will do this iconic faction justice.
