Forge mode is finally coming toHalo Infiniteon November 8. Ahead of the “beta” launch,343 Industrieshas released ablog postanswering common community questions.

Forge has come a long way since its introduction inHalo 3. From default maps with tweakable weapon spawns to dedicated “sandbox” maps and now Infinite’s iteration of forge which will include scalable objects and scriptable AI, the potential has become endless.

343 is looking to create a matchmaking playlist based entirely on community-created maps, but naturally, the studio will be waiting an appropriate amount of time after Forge is released in order to allow high-quality creations to filter through. Eventually, some creations may be deemed good enough to be added to the Halo Championship Series (HCS) rotation.

Eight players will be able to play Forge mode together at any given time. However, a last-minute bug means that every player will have to enter the game at the same time in order to play together. 343 considers fixing this bug a “top priority.”

For now, players won’t be able to integrate internal campaign AI into Forge, but there’s interest in exploring this further in the future. This will be especially exciting for those interested in creating PvE experiences within Forge.

The majority of initially available assets in Forge will be of UNSC or Forerunner origin. The devs are currently finishing up the Forerunner asset pack, and will then be moving on to adding Banished assets. Following that, factions like the Covenant will be considered for future addition.

The soon-to-be-released version of Forge is only the beta, with several features planned to be added in the near future. These include the ability to edit developer maps, a mini-game game mode, AI spawning tools and the ability to add water to maps.

The decision to turn Forge from a map editor into a game engine was decided early on in the development process. The team was inspired by a Tom French quote, “If you give them a toy, they’ll make toys. If you give them a tool, they’ll make experiences.”
