There’s not many filmmakers in Hollywood that made such an impact on the horror fantasy genre than Guillermo del Toro, who is known for his versatility and eye for detail. While his films mostly blend gothicism, fairly tales and the macabre which creates a very aesthetic appeal, he’s also very attentive on the movement and technicalities.

This is what he admires on other filmmakers. He studies them so as to get inspiration, and he’s been very expressive of his awe on Steven Spielberg’s works, particularly his grip on camera works.
Guillermo del Toro explains why Steven Spielberg’sCatch Me If You Canis top-tier
WhileGuillermo del Toroisn’t one to make mainstream films, the majority of his projects are incredibly popular with the fans. “That’s the revenge of the nerd”: Real Reason Why You Can’t Stop Fantasizing About Guillermo Del Toro’s Villains Is His Fight Against Fascism
In an interview withBright Wall/Dark Room, the Mexican filmmaker revealed that the 2002 film starringLeonardo DiCaprio,Catch Me If you may, is one of his top favorite films.
That movie to me is like a musical. You cannot choreograph a movie with more precision than that movie is choreographed. Every shot is a little masterclass about how to do internal montage, by which I mean the montage of the camera and actor’s ballet, you know?

Spielberg’s constant dispense of three-minute one-shot sequences impressed del Toro in that he criticized how most people just focus on the content and the dramaturgy, but not on the small technical details that give sound and rhythm to the picture.
In addition, he remarked that making films is more than just hiring the best actors or writing the perfect script. “You’re orchestrating everything,” and this includes the movement and angles of cameras, the selection of the best footage, etc. Every choice is like a brushstroke; it has to be intentional, and this is why he appreciates the works of Spielberg so much.

“That girl is getting a Jaeger”: The Game of Thrones Actress Guillermo del Toro Wanted for Pacific Rim 2
Catch Me If You Canis a critical and commercial hit, and the fact that this is based on the true—well, disputable—story of Frank Abagnale Jr. makes it even more impressive.
Guillermo del Toro tweets about Spielberg’sCatch Me If You Can
Del Toro notably professed his admiration for the film andSpielberg’s exemplary workon it on social media, writing a short review on the technicalities:
I concur. Prodigious, nimble camera/actor staging. Out Donen’s Stanley Donen (or Minelli or Wellman) and has at heart a wonderful set of performances and a touching, delicate personal story disguised as a romp. I watch it every year at least once.https://t.co/uA7OthTiYU

It’s perfectly engineered. Spielberg is the modern master of the 1-3 minute single shot. Precision work. Leonardo arrives from school and her mother is in the bedroom with the Rotary club guy ( a beautiful master ) and then with minimal coverage he completes the scene
It’s so great to see a veteran filmmaker appreciating and praising a fellow legend in the field, and the next time we watch a del Toro movie, we can say that there are elements in it that were inspired and influenced by what he has learned from watching Spielberg’s movies.

Catch Me If You Canis currently available to watch on Paramount+.
