Another of Sony’s video game properties is being prepared to make the jump from the living room to the silver screen, and this time it’s the open-world adventure game Gravity Rush, which first appeared in 2012 on Sony’s PS Vita handheld console.
According toDeadline, which also reported last week that aDays Gone movieis in the works, Gravity Rush is being pushed for production with Anna Mastro (Shameless, Jane the Virgin, Just Beyond) directing a script by Emily Jerome, who’s only credits to date - at least according toIMDB- are for writing and producing the upcoming thriller Panopticon, starring MCU star Anthony Mackie.
There has been no official announcement by Sony, PlayStation Productions, Anna Mastro, or Emily Jerome, but it’s worth noting that Deadline has a history of being accurate when it comes to reporting on unannounced television and movie projects. It wouldn’t be irresponsible to assume, then, that a Gravity Rush movie is somewhere in Sony’s vault of unannounced movies and TV shows.
Gravity Rush began life as PS Vita exclusive developed by Sony’s Japan Studio before being ported over to the PS4 as Gravity Rush Remastered. The sequel, Gravity Rush 2, was released in 2017, though it skipped out on the PS Vita and was released as a PS4 exclusive. Unfortunately, the series hasn’t commanded the same success as some of Sony’s other first-party properties, and so a Gravity Rush 3 looks unlikely at this time. That being said, a big screen movie release could rejuvenate interest in the franchise and potentially lead to another sequel, or at least a continuation of the rich and interesting world that started on the PS Vita’s little screen.
Sony has been on something of a roll as of late with its movie business. Numerous PlayStation properties have made the transition from the living room to the movie theatre, such as Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and looking forward, Days Gone and Gravity Rush. What next? God of War? Sly Cooper? Parappa the Rapper? The possibilities are endless…
