This guide will tackle the fight with the creatureNidhogg, which you’ll encounter while journeyingwith Freya in Vanaheim. This is a bit of a frantic fight, as Nidhogg attacksswiftly and decisivelythroughout the entire encounter. If you came here in search of some tips and tricks to overcome this bear of a fight, then you’ve come to the right place.
Stage One: Beware Of Bifrost
In this first stage, Nidhogg has a couple of attacks accompanied by a yellow ring and a couple ofBifrost attacks. You’ll notice half of its body is still inside the rift it opened.Evade or parry its bite and claw slam. These yellow ringed attacks will break a normal block, so try to avoid standing with your block up.Attack Nidhogg’s claws and head until it is stunned, at which point you’ll be prompted to useR3and have Kratospull it fully out of its rift.
Bifrost Damage
Nidhogg will scrape its claw along the ground and toss awave of Bifrost energyat you. Nidhogg will also slam its claws on the ground andcoat the ground in Bifrost energy.Do not stand or run into this, or you’ll be damaged. Be careful to avoid both of these attacks, asBifrost damage can stack up quickly. When first struck, you’ll see a blue marker on your health bar. If untouched, you’ll regain your health. If hit with Bifrost damage again, you’ll lose the full blue marker in health.

Stage Two: Watch The Tail
In this stage of the fight, Nidhogg isfully exposed, making it slightly easier to attack. You can expect to see Nidhogg use the same attacks it used in stage one, but with a new one added to the mix. With this new attack,Nidhogg uses its tail to pierce the ground. The pierce has a red ring, so you’ll need to evade it.Once Nidhogg’s tail is in the ground, it will glow with a blue ring around it. If left alone, the tail will burst with Bifrost energy, dealing damage to anything nearby. However, you can counter this move byrunning up to the tail anddouble tapping L1.Kratos will use his shield to interrupt the attack, avoiding any and all Bifrost damage. At the end of this stage, Freya willregain her original formand join the fight.

Stage Three: Tree Trunk Battle
At this point, Nidhogg will pull out some new tricks. It will most likely attempt to keep its distance from you. When Nidhogg is in a tree, you can expect to see it shoot a beam from its tail that you can dodge under.Nidhogg will also use its tail toshoot yellow ringed projectiles at you.If your timing is right, you can parry these projectiles. Nidhogg will also open small rifts and drive its tail through them, striking wherever you’re standing. This is ared ringed attackyou’ll want to do your best to avoid.
Burn The Right Tree
When Nidhogg climbs onto the right tree, you want touse Freya’s runic arrowsto amplify the elemental damage of your chaos blades.Once the runes are in place, hit them with the chaos bladesto light the tree on fire andbring Nidhogg down to the groundwhere you’re able to resume attacking it.
Freeze The Left Tree
Nidhogg will eventually retreat to the left tree in an attempt to get away from you. Here, you’ll want touse Freya’s runic arrows again, but this time she tells you to use yourLeviathan Axefor frost damage.Once you’ve put the runes in place and frosted them with your axe,Nighogg will move back downto the ground so you’re able to resume the fight in earnest.
Counter Nidhogg’s Rift Stomach
Nidhogg will occasionally open a rift to its stomach, sucking in all kind of debrisaround it. Then, it will close the rift andspit the debris out in a red ringed attack you’ll need to evade. The trick to interrupting this attack is to haveFreya shoot a runic arrowinto the stomach, and then have Kratosfollow up with the Leviathan Axeto trigger a frost explosion that will hurt the creature. The rift is only open for a few seconds, so you’ll have toact quicklyto land this attack.
Remain vigilant in your battle with this terrible beast, and you will be rewarded with what is easilyone of the best cutscenes in the entire game.
