TheFinal Fantasy VII Remakewas bound to play a little differently than its sequels because it only takes place in Midgar. It is therefore not surprising that the developers ofRemakeand its sequel,Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, drew inspiration from quite different games.

Cloud slashed through zigzagging corridors, squirmed through confined spaces, and only sporadically veered off the linear path to explore towns and finish side quests inFinal Fantasy VII Rebirth, which was modeled after some of the biggest action-adventure hits of the PS4 generation.

Naoki Hamaguchi Was Inspired byThe Witcher 3andHorizon Zero Dawn

In an interview withEdge Magazine, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director ofRemakeandRebirth, talked candidlyabout his sources of inspiration.

He claimed that becauseRemakeis more linear, it was inspired byThe Last of Us, while Rebirth was inspired byThe Witcher 3andHorizon Zero Dawn. He was also concerned regarding the authenticity of the franchise. He said:

We looked to recreate the same kinds of experiences and systems that we had in the 1997 game, but with this more modern edge.

This isn’t all too surprising. Very suddenly, the directors had to go from making a game that took us to different hub areas, to one that was much more open. So, it makes sense that Hamaguchi looked to these two titles, particularlyThe Witcher 3, as it’s one of the most popular games to pull this off.

The Approach Worked Perfectly forFinal Fantasy VII Rebirth

Anyway, the strategy was successful. Since its release earlier this year,Final Fantasy VII Rebirthhas garnered positive reviews from both fans and critics, andit is currently vying for Game of the Yearat the 2024 Game Awards. If Rebirth wins the prize this time, it will be a huge victory for Square Enix, asRemakelost toThe Last of Us Part 2in 2020.

This time, Hamaguchi turned to open-world blockbusters and chose to playThe Witcher 3andHorizon Zero Dawnto observe how other developers constructed their expansive worlds because he knew the team wouldn’t be able to reuse the techniques they learned while creatingRemake.

However, the beast ofFinal Fantasy VII Rebirthwas completely different. These days, Cloud and Co. aren’t just navigating the city’s naturally constrained and straight roads. In the 1997 game, the group is in a vast, open Gaia, where they can literally walk on the different fields, forests, and towns on the map without encountering many obstacles.
