Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthis one of2024’s best games, but you only get to experience it if you own a PlayStation 5. Perhaps this is why, earlier this year,Square Enix said its release was seen as a disappointment. Rebirth failed to outsell its predecessor,Final Fantasy VII Remake.
There are two key reasons for this. First, Remake launched on the PlayStation 4, a platform with over 110 million units worldwide since release. For comparison’s sake, there were approximately 55 million units sold for the PlayStation 5 when Rebirth launched. Second, Rebirth launched in April 2020, the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown. Gamers had nothing else to do but play games. Today, there are far fewer restrictions on what people can do outside, resulting in more distractions pulling people away from video games.

Ex-PlayStation Boss Wants To End The Console War And Have “One Standard Console”
Shawn Layden says it’s time to get the platform wars out of the way and have one standard home console.
Naoki Hamaguchi, co-director ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeand director of Rebirth, has another idea to address the sales issues: bring the series to additional platforms. Final Fantasy developers have already talked aboutbringing future releases in the franchise to the Xbox platform, but why stop there? If the goal is to maximize sales, you need to maximize the amount of platforms you’re releasing on.

Will We See Final Fantasy 7 on Xbox?
Hamaguchi is a fan of the Xbox console, owning one himself. “I think it’s a great hardware platform,“he recently told GamesRadar+. “I do like Xbox.” Does that mean we’ll see Final Fantasy 7 on a Microsoft console one day? It’s a possibility.
“Certainly I do want to bringFinal Fantasy 7and the Remake series to as many players out there as possible. We want to create that situation, that environment, where more players can play the games in future, and we want to look in that direction.”

Which Xbox Exclusive Do You Most Want To See On PS5?
With Microsoft likely to announce its first wave of PS5 games next week, what Xbox game do you most want to see on PS5?
The industry shift away from console exclusives is a sign of the times.Microsoft has adopted a policy that sees first-party releases coming to PlayStation on day one.Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a major holiday release for Xbox, is one such example. It’s expected thatThe Elder Scrolls 6, once considered a major console exclusive for Xbox, will also be released on PlayStation. Microsoft is going with the trends, but will other studios follow? Hamguchi thinks it’s likely.

“It’s so much more diversified now, so I think that that’s probably why our CEO, Mr. [Takashi] Kiryu, made that decision to move more in the direction of multiplatform – that’s just the way that the industry is going.”
