Warning: This post contains major SPOILERS for Final Fantasy 16
Putting aside the Eikon battles and Game of Thrones-inspired setting, one of the biggest draws to Final Fantasy 16 was the chance to tour Valisthea with Torgal–a loyal wolf and childhood companion to the game’s protagonist, Clive Rosfield.

However, integrating this faithful beast into gameplay begs one question from the fandom before the curtain drops on this violent and unforgiving world, because if Torgal perishes, we riot. Here’s everything you need to know about Torgal’s fate in Final Fantasy 16.

Torgal’s Contribution To Gameplay
First introduced as a pup in Year of the Realm 860, Torgal is a friendly, outgoing pup making a racket on the grounds of Rosalith, the capital of Rosaria, while Clive is trying to impress his father, Archduke Elwin. We are then reunited with Torgal 13 years later when Clive is an adult and the wolf has grown considerably, favoring the company of Charon at Cid’s Hideaway.
Torgal is a male wolf resembling the breed of gray wolves in the real world, sporting yellow eyes and a bangle on his left leg. In addition to being Clive’s (and the player’s) moral support during travels,Torgal assists in battlethrough the AI-controlled Ring of Timely Assistance and deploys attacks such as Sic and Ravage.

Sic sees Torgal pounce on whatever enemy Clive has targeted or one picked at random and activating it after a combo can trigger a Precision Sic or a Punishing Sic if Torgal attacks after an enemy has been felled. Unlike Sic’s single pounce, Ravage allows Torgal to deploy a multi-attack, and it’s particularly useful when you’re surrounded by a mob.
The hound is also able to heal Clive during battle, which is a massive assist during boss battles without potions. Once actioned, Torgal will howl and replenish a small amount of Clive’s HP and this action can be called upon multiple times in battle.
Unlike another triple-A title released this year from Nintendo’s camp, Square Enix actually allows youto pet Torgalas many times as you want, while Clive also tells him he’s a good boy and feeds him snacks to keep his strength up.
Does Torgal Die In Final Fantasy 16?
Readers will be relieved to know thatTorgal does not diein Final Fantasy 16 and makes it to the end of the narrative without too many close calls. After all, it would just be cruel if the developers made players invest in the wolf only to give him a demise during the final act.
We did grow concerned for Torgal during Clive’s battle with Benedikta when the Garuda-powered villain threw Torgal aside with the impact knocking him unconscious. The wolf remained out of action for most of that encounter but swiftly came to Clive’s aid during a crucial part of the showdown.

Nearing the end of the game, it’s revealed that Torgal is actually the dominant of the legendary wolf, Fenrir–a beast that’s no stranger to the Final Fantasy series. Torgal summons the power of Fenrir during Clive and Gav’s mission to rescue Jill from Hugo Kupka’s executioners by transforming during the fight and later gains the blessing, Blood of Fenrir.
Before Clive enters into the finalbattle against Ultima, Torgal stays behind with Jill to help the survivors and the last we see of our loyal friend is him reacting to Clive’s fate revealed moments before.
The Post-Credits Scene Welcomes A New Pup
Even though Torgal’s time in the story is over, Final Fantasy 16’s post-credits scene offers something to be interpreted as Torgal’s legacy that will presumably be passed down in Valisthea for generations to come.
Another time jump occurs in the epilogue, and we pick up with two young boys who are playing in the countryside within a field of flowers. Frolicking in front of a cottage, the boys are roleplaying and pretending to be Eikons and one of them reveals a light brown pup who they want to be Bahamut.
Since all the magic left Valisthea after Clive destroyed the Mothercrystals, it doesn’t seem plausible that this new pup has anything to do with the Fenrir family tree or is related to Torgal. However, the wolf we came to know and love set a precedent for friendly, pointy-eared canines to share their companionship in Valisthea’s future.
