Rails inHyper Light Breakerare very odd weapons, taking battery that you need to get by killing enemies and hoping for random drops, and working quite differently depending on the gun.

There are quite a few shotguns, some weird lasers, and very pitiful pistols that you’ll scavenge, and I figured it would be quite nice to rank each of these ranged attacks by their effectiveness.

What’s The Difference Between Roguelike & Roguelite?

Roguelike and Roguelite can be thrown about pretty frequently, but their differences are pretty subtle. We’ll break down everything to know right now.

These are all being evaluated as common weapons at level 1, where possible, butas is the case for most things in roguelikes, there is no black-and-white answer to what is better or worse.

Each of these Rails can have modifiers and attributes that improve their damage, fire rate, etc. It’s up to you to decide what you like most, but this list is my general recommendation for each.

9Radiant SG2

Worse Than a Laser Pointer

The description of the Radiant SG2 states it has “Low DMG, but the fastest fire rate”, which is technically true, butthe death by a thousand cuts only occurs after several minutes of shooting.

This gun requires you to slowly walk around and fire your laser at the enemy, which typically only does around 5 damage per second, and it’s awful.

This makes it difficult to take out small enemies with large health pools, and it’s practically worthless when fighting bosses, as they can kill you before you’ve even taken an eighth of their health.

Guns inHyper Light Breakertypically serve the purpose of being fast, reliable ranged weapons that you can rely on when your blade won’t do the job, and the SG2 fails at every single aspect of that.

8Soldier’s Sidearm

Pitiful Performance

While the default blade is great, the default gun it’s paired with sucks. The Soldier’s Sidearm comes as a freebie, and it feels like it, with a decent fire rate and poor damage.

It does the job of fending off far-away foes fine, but you’re going to take your finger off of L2 the second they get within a few feet of you since it’ll no longer be worth using.

It’s one of the only guns I know of that can occasionally do 0 damage, which is both hilarious and a little bit saddening, as it’s yourintroduction to the gunplay.

The recoil on it is also quite annoying, making you manually adjust the gun downwards after every shot if you want to keep firing as quickly as possible, and it makes it earn a spot this low.

Clockwork Assault Rifle

Up from abysmal to mid, we’ve got the DZR, which fires off three rounds rather quickly. The only qualm I have is the low damage. It’s not the worst, but you’re probably not reliably killing with it.

It does have decent range, though, which makes ita great tool to aggro far-away enemies or quickly fend off a boss while dodging, since the shots come out fast.

If you upgrade the damage a ton I can imagine it’d be pretty good, but you can also say that for just about every other gun on this list, it won’t outperform any of them.

If you’re already doing tons of damage with your melee hits and want some range, the DZR does the job fine, but it’s not impressive and doesn’t deserve anything higher.

Barely Functional, But Fun

The Magrex is a submachine gun, and it feels like it has the recoil and fire rate of a proper machine gun at just a fraction of the damage, which is frustrating.

Either it’s bugged or just heavily inaccurate, but I cannot for the life of me hit shots while trying to use this thing unless I stop firing every few shots to re-adjust.

It hits one shot, then even though my aim is dead-on, every other shot will miss. It doesn’t matter that much, though, becauseeven when it does hit, it’s pretty middling.

The damage isn’t terrible by any means and would be even better with a higher fire rate, but it’s frustrating to use and occasionally non-functional.

5Grind 42R

Bursting Out

The Grind 42R feels about as slow as any shotgun while making you sit around for about as long as the Radiant SG2 has you, yet it gives you such insane damage that none of those things matter.

It pairs incredibly well with the Steady Shot Holobyte, with the charging timer of both syncing up nicely to give you shots that deal a massive amount of damage.

Even without it, you canget up close to enemies and take massive chunks out of their health bar, or use spread shots to hit several enemies for small amounts of damage.

Its lack of range and incredibly sluggish fire rate keep it lower, though, as it won’t pair well with every build and certainly takes quite a bit of risk to use effectively.

Cut Like Paper

The Shredder does some good damage and has a really quick fire rate for a shotgun, but it’s severely limited by its range and ammo, only holding around 4 rounds before reloading.

It fires two high-power shots every round, which can take off a big chunk of most enemies' health, all while firing quickly, so it’s still a pretty great option despite its limitations.

It’sgreat for quickly dispatching weaker enemies before getting back to your melee weapon, and especially great at taking out flying enemies if your blade is bad at doing that.

It’s a pretty well-rounded gun that can be shoved into most builds with no problem, but it’s still pretty capped on its utility by the range it can output, good luck doing anything to far away bats.

3Blunderbuss

Bust It Out

The Blunderbuss suffers from the same distance issue that every other shotgun does, but it makes up for that in spades by having a huge spread shot of high-damage bullets.

If you hit an enemy at point-blank, it’s a guaranteed kill, and even at mid-range, it performs admirably, taking massive chunks off with a decent fire rate and ammo.

It’s the best shotgun in my mindbecause it does everything you need one to do, firing a big burst of bullets that can kill things and not leaving you open for too long.

You’re going to struggle to kill far-away enemies with it, but that struggle will turn into satisfaction as they fly towards you and feel the fury of a thousand suns.

The Power of the Sun

The Zaliska isa hand cannon that is exactly as cool as that description implies, shooting out massive orbs that will kill most enemies in one or two shots.

It’s also got a decent amount of ammo, and some incredible range, in exchange for a somewhat sluggish fire rate, making for a lot of power in a small device.

7 Best Roguelike RPGs, Ranked

There have been a lot of great Roguelikes with RPG elements released so far. Here’s a look at some of the absolute best.

The recoil on shots can make it seem a bit unwieldy, but it’s more than manageable with how big the shots are. You’ll always be hitting something, eventually.

If you boost the fire rate and get more battery, then this becomes one of the best DPS sources inHyper Light Breaker, and easy to pull out at a moment’s notice to dispatch anything.

1Diamond Shot

Dust Your Enemies

Easily the best gun in the game, and up there as one of the best damage options, the Diamond Shot gives you a ton of range, a spread shot, and isn’t lacking in damage at all.

It sacrifices a bit of ammo and fire rate for this, but both of those issues are pretty minor when you’re taking off massive chunks of enemy health every half a second.

It spreads out five bolts that all coalesce into a really powerful burst wherever the enemy you’re aiming at is, making for effective single and multi-target usage.

Using this thing makes the Soldier’s Sidearm feel like a NERF gun, it can tear through enemies at a very respectable distance and will be a great thing to have by your side.
