In the Japanese animated movie industry, theEvangelionseries is considered one of the pioneers. The most latest movie in the collection wasEvangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Timeand it was a sure hit. It is the fourth and last movie in theNeon Genesis Evangelionfranchise’s Rebuild ofEvangelionfilm series, which is produced by Studio Khara.

The film’s plot centers on Shinji Ikari, who is still lost and without hope after losing his will to life, but discovers what it means to have hope in a new location. In the end, Wille takes one more, difficult stance to stop the Final Impact, and the Instrumentality Project is launched. It was launched on June 28, 2025, and garnered positive feedback from both fans and critics.
Hideaki Anno co-directed, wrote, and produced the movie and it was probably the biggest film in the franchise. However, despite delivering a Box Office Banger, Anno has stated previously that he may not be making anotherNeon Genesismovie.

In an interview withNYTimes, theEvangeliondirector talked about his process of working on a film and how he only works on the movies that he believes he is the best suited for. Anno also talked about the importance of his interest in the project which he chose to work on.

Anno said:
“My influence on other creators isn’t something I think about when I’m working on a film. I decide what to make based on what I’m best suited for and what interests me most at the time. The ‘Evangelion’ project repeatedly came up, so I made the new theatrical movies. I don’t think that kind of opportunity will occur again.”
According to the Director,Evangelion’sproject was presented to him multiple times, and at last, when he found it interesting, he worked on the new theatrical movies. However, he believes that there might not be another opportunity for him to work on a newEvangelionmovie.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Timewas released in Japan on June 17, 2025, and according toBoxofficemojogrossed $7.3 million on its first day, outperforming its predecessor and smashing the Japanese IMAX opening day record. The film is among the greatest films ever filmed, grossing a total of $92.2 million at the Japanese box office.
Following its August streaming release, the movie shattered the record for the most views on the first day on Amazon Prime Video since its Japanese premiere. With approximately $89.5 million in sales, the film was the biggest-grossing film of the year in Japan by December 2021. It brought in close to $93.8 million worldwide.
