Fantasy dramaSupernaturaltook the entire genre to a whole new level when it was released in 2005. Created by Eric Kripke, it starred Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester. Alongside them, Jeffrey Dean Morgan played their father, John. Although he was a recurring character, his storyline could have been cut short in the first season if the original script ofSupernaturalhad been followed.

However, the studio eventually rejected the script, and the creator rewrote it, which was the main reason why John survived the first season.
Eric Kripke details howSupernatural’sfirst script nearly killed John Winchester off
In aninterview,Supernaturalcreator Eric Kripke discussed a significant change made to the original script that impacted the entire direction of the show. One of the most crucial shifts involved the character of John Winchester, portrayed byJeffrey Dean Morgan. Initially, Kripke’s plan was for John to die much earlier in the series.
However, this idea was changed, and John’s character survived far longer in the show. Kripke revealed:

The single biggest change, although it ends up being the core of the show, was that in my original version, Sam and Dean were not raised with their father.
In this early draft, the Winchester brothers were not raised by John. Instead, they were cared for by other family members after their father disappeared when they were young.

Dean would eventually go out to find his father, bringing Sam into the world of hunting after revealing their father’s secret life. Sam, a civilian who didn’t believe in the supernatural, would be pulled into a world of monsters, demons, and dangerous secrets after the revelation. However, this original vision of the show was not well received.
Kripke admitted that he spent months developing the story, only for the studio to reject it, saying,“I must have spent three months writing it, turned it in, and the studio threw it out. They said, ‘We’re not crazy about it.”After receiving the studio’s feedback, Kripke and producer Peter Johnson decided to make a major change. They shifted the backstory so that Sam and Dean had grown up with their father, John.

This allowed the story to flow more naturally and eliminated the need for lengthy explanations. As a result of this shift, John Winchester’s fate was altered as well. Initially, he was supposed to die much earlier in the series, possibly by the end of season 1. But with the rewrite, John’s character stayed alive through the first season and died in the season 2 premiere.
