Shadow of the Erdtreeis shaping up to be FromSoftware’s largest DLC to date, a worthy addition to the already greatElden Ringbase title. The studio has found tremendous success in this form of game development where it is insanely difficult but not entirely impossible, creating a new sub-genre that fans have coined as ‘Soulslike’. Praised for their advanced combat systems and character movement,Sekirowas the epitome of what a Soulslike game should be.
The previous FromSoftware projectSekiro: Shadows Die Twicehas garnered universal acclaim and even won Game of the Year during The Game Awards in 2019, clearly they have perfected the formula and injected in the successor which isElden Ring, and continue to do so with the DLC. During an interview with Famitsu, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared details about what to expect fromShadow of the Erdtree.

Miyazaki stated that development forShadow of the Erdtreebegan after the base game had been patched, with ideas being thrown beforehand but couldn’t fit inElden Ringorganically which prompted them to decide it would be best suited as added content. The studio wants the player to experience the story for themselves without holding their hands and at their own pace, with the challenge being on anequal footing.

FromSoftware Studios knows how to elevate its titles by learning from its previous projects.Sekiro: Shadows Die Twicewas a stepping stone for the studio and a great learning experience that improved on world-building and level design. The originalDemon’s Souls, TheDark Soulstrilogy, andBloodborneall bear the marking of the difficult nature but rewarding feel that FromSoftware is known for.
Elden Ring’s DLC Has A Deeper Meaning
The original game was released in 2022 and previous titles have at least indicated that a DLC should come the following year or within a matter of months, which was not the case for this installment.Bloodbornereceived new content after 8 months but the developers wanted to createan expansion that is on par with the level of the base gameso that players could spend hours exploring dungeons and unlocking new weapons.

Taking notes from their older games like the attack power feature in Sekiro can only be accessed in the new area, which gives the DLC something the base game doesn’t and one of the more compelling reasons to dive back into the game. FromSoftware wants to share its vision with the players but gives them total control and agency as they explore and fight newer and harder enemies and bosses.
