But regardless of whether you choose to take that role, in today’s guide, I’ll briefly explain and touch on the best sources to help you maximize those level gains.The main catalyst will still be speed, since the faster your coordination, the quicker you’ll reach the max level in your expedition run.
Items & Passive Bonuses
First, I can’t stress enough how vital the usable items are in this game besides the Boiled Crab and Exalted Flesh ones. If you want to reach the maximum level quickly and get more Runes, you’d better check every dropped item to see if you get anyGold-Pickled Foot Fowl, as these will temporarily increase Rune acquisition.
On the subject of temporary bonuses, you can also find and interact with gold-glowing hedges across the map,which will boost your rune gains for a short time.
Suppose you remember farming for Runes in the base game. In that case, you’ll likely recognize one of my teammates rocking the Gold Scarab Talisman in their inventory, shown in the image above, which increases the number of runes you obtain from sources.
Besides these items, you can also acquire specific boons from Field Bosses that will increase the value of Runes dropped from defeated enemies. If RNG manages to bless you with this early on, then I highly advise ignoring any other reward and picking that buff up.
Evergaol Encounters
The secret for me to opening any expedition run is to have the churches take first priority due to the Crimson Flask upgrades, but the next on the agenda are always those mini-forts with Godrick soldiers.At the top of these with the boss, there’s always a chest that can possibly drop a Stonesword Key.
You can also find certain Relics whose main trait is providing a Stonesword Key at the start of every run.
You can use these Stonesword Keys to open up the Evergaols located on the map to trigger a Field Boss encounter.As shown in the images above, you’ll soon notice how they always have a reward choice of outright gifting you with 10,000 or 20,000 Runes.
It’s the reason why a buddy of mine and Ialways try to find a Stonesword Key in the beginning sections of the first day.It pretty much guarantees a freebie boon that can give you a hefty chunk of Runes, as long as the other choice doesn’t seem enticing enough over them.

Field Bosses
This may seem obvious to some, but attempt to maximize your Field Boss encounters in every expedition run. Most of the time, if you manage to pick up local clue maps from the forts or come across them yourself, these Field Bosses will be marked on the map by a dark monster icon.
It goes the same even for those Trash Mob-turned-boss fights where their health is divided through several enemies.Even if their reward is basic at best, you’ll still get a decent amount of Runes for quickly jumping in and defeating them.
On the second day, you’re able to fight Field Bosses that have a higher threat level, but are equally more rewarding with their loot.
We’re trying to make every single Rune count here.Hence, it’s never a bad idea to just skip those in-the-way camps or ruins,because if you’re coordinated enough and quick-paced, you can just quickly maul the boss fight in their vicinity and move on to your main destination.
Shifting Earth Events
The Shifting Earth Events are possibly the best bang-for-your-buck ways to acquire Runes in your expedition runs.These event zones on the map will have quite a few challenging bosses that’ll help you quickly reach the max level with a secret at the end that’ll reward you with one of the best loot/buffs in the game.
You’ll initially only haveaccess to the Crater Shifting Earth Eventin the early game, but as you successfully beat more expeditions for the first time, you’ll slowly get to unlock and access more of these map variation zones with your squad. Trust me, they’re incredibly worth it with the risk involved.
Depending on whether it’s the perilous Scarlet Woods or the frostbite-inducing attrition tests at Mountaintop Peak, just be sure to properly go about their main path and objectives. The last thing you need is to waste time with trash fodder enemies or lose your way in some of the legacy dungeon-inspired events.

There are hundreds of weapons in the catalogue of Soulsborne games, but these take the cake.
Central Castle
Putting aside the Shifting Earth Events for a moment, the large central castle in the middle of the map will be your next best source to gain a massive chunk of Runes to level up during expeditions. There are a few key details to know about this place.
This castle will always have one of three different types of main enemies: either the Banished Stormveil Knights, Pot-throwing Trolls, or Crucible Knights.You want to pray you get the latter here due to their individual Rune value, but getting the former two isn’t so bad either, just so long as you’re quick to take them all out.
There’s a boss fight that you can partake in the underground cellar here from the main entrance, which eventually leads to a reward chest with Talismans.
The trolls can be the most annoying ones to deal with due to their ridiculously high damage and tracking with those explosive pots, but again, with a good team and by entering through the backside of the castle from the rooftops, you can easily take them out together.
Take my advice and play it safe; get here on the second day of the runand wipe everything out efficiently instead of wasting time doing minimal damage to the enemies and bosses here on Day 1.
As long as you clean everything out here with ease, have solid RNG, and avoid having any useless deaths in your overall run, then I’m sure you will reach that sweet level 15 for an optimal experience against the Nightlord and even nab that ‘Mastery’ Trophy/Achievement.
